Coded or Conversational?

February 20th, 2023

slide-75_1676891613.jpg

Do you like being a planned coded software, or being natural and conversational?

Let me share my thoughts, then I invite you to share yours!

I think it's better to be yourself. I think it's better to be informal than sounding like Noni. I think it's better to be quiet within your safe boundaries and talk only when you truly feel like talking.

Not saying coded/planned can't be good! It can be! But when? When not? Let's discuss it together!

I'd like to hear what you think! Please share below.

@Fristo

Personally I feel more comfortable with the Planned and Coded approach, throughout my life I've been planning events constantly, and that's how I'd like to stick with it!

@Zaxoosh

I understand that its so much easier to follow a code of guidelines. I make some lists sometimes. I'm not a freestyler.😀

@Zaxoosh Planning sounds awesome! I love it too.

So, this is a super interesting topic for me, especially with the rise of Artificial Intelligence and computers capable of “making friends” and having long involved conversations. Some people here even joke that they are bots sometimes. Coded and planned conversations seem to be encouraged for certain roles, like moderating, hosting and leading a planned group. However, I notice that certain personality characteristics shine through, revealing that the persons are actually human. I have been curious to try out some of the computers purported to be able to establish friendships. I wonder what they would bring to the table in terms of “heart” or “spark” or even mistakes like normal humans make. I agree with your statement, Fristo, “I think it’s better to be yourself,” with the caveat if “yourself” is rude, attacking and abusive then I sorta wish you would learn some politeness codes first especially before engaging with people who may be coming here in a distressed state. That’s all I have for now, but it’s an interesting discussion for me, so I may chime in later when more people have shared their opinions.

Wow, I like how you've put it. Be yourself. But if yourself is rude, learn some politeness codes.

February 20th, 2023

@VioletVeritas I think 'truly oneself' would mean feeling deeply connected with one's inner wisdom and poise. In such a state, kindness comes out, and care and empathy get expressed.

Fristo, that’s a nice thought! However, in reality there are people whose inner self is not that nice. We may aspire to a world of gentle caring and of course I approve this direction. Caution and alertness and critical thinking skills are still necessary, as well as realistic appraisals of dangers, and I wouldn’t want to discourage learning these skills for the sake of survival. Do I sound less than jolly or utopian with my comment? Well, I’m a realist. I believe in keeping my feet on the ground and my brain open to all the rapidly changing possibilities.

@VioletVeritas We certainly learn to live the best way over time. We discover what works based on our practical experiences! The feelings of kindness, care, and compassion, bring harmony to the human world, but yes, alongside these qualities, many other qualities are required to lead a satisfactory life.

I too have had much pondering, contemplating, and free thoughts on this topic myself.

One of the biggest things that cannot be argued. What is different between me and the next human? We are composed of protons, neutrons, atoms, molecules, etc.
Next is what is the difference between the human body and a machine, such as a computer?
Nothing.
We have our own nuclear reactor [Digestive system] and Nuclear waste (which has its own issues).
This nuclear reactor provides the energy to the mechanical items such as levers, pumps, and contractors (muscles). Applying an electrical charge to the muscle, causes the muscle to contract.
The Nerves are nothing more then power cables, network cables, conduits of the sort.
Central processing would be the master control board for nuclear plants with operators, the brain is nothing more then the same.

In computing, a .5 volt is equal to a Zero and 5 volts is equal to a One, is no different than for the nerves and such.

That all being said,
Social interactions, learn from experience. if you put your hand in the fire you will be burnt. When you get burnt, you don't do it again. Experience.
For me Social is extremely complicated and requires great effort without a platform.
Meaning (like in computers WIndows versus MacOS versus Solaris, etc.) if I meet someone in work, there is a governors or predefined path(s) that can be followed. As in Example: a co-worker could say "I see you have a wedding band" long pause. I have the protection of stating it is not relevant to discuss my personal life at work. I like to separate the worlds.
But on the flipside, I could say "I see you are new here. Is there anything I could direct you on or assist you with?"

What a wonderful, absolutely captivating response! Are you a bot? No, just joking. But how can we tell really. Today, I just wrote a story about Leeks, and how they brought me out of a dark place, and then I read your passage, and thought, well, a bot couldn't do that, there must be a human behind those thoughts. One thing is for sure, we both have loads too much time to ruminate on these matters and maybe we'd be better off looking for "real things" to think about. All joking aside, and I hope, I dearly hope you know I was joking, the whole bot thing, everything, I just have to say that your response was the most authentic and thoughtful, with the emphasis on truly thoughtful response, I've read to this line of thinking, honestly. My hat, or beanie, or hood as it happens to be today is off to you. Thank you for restoring my faith in humanity.

@Fristo

Thank you for bringing up this question for discussion.

A little mix of both makes a perfect person. A full on conversationist can be exhausting to listen to and interact with. A robotic person can be boring with no social cues or emotion. A blend would just be right for me.

@JoyHappyNess Makes total sense! I think we have both positive and dark sides within us. It's about tapping into the positive side and letting it be expressed through us, so that helpful and productive words may flow out.

Hmm, tough one! I think being someone with potential autism, natural and conversational scares me, and usually ends up making me feel worse if people don't understand where I'm coming from. Planned coded is good, but doesn't give you room for all eventualities. I'd much rather natural and conversational, if it wasn't for the judgement and misunderstanding of others, as I believe everyone should be themselves.

@CalmCoral It helps to take your time before trusting the environment and gradually opening up if it feels safe enough. If sadly not, we move on to a better and safer environment.

It is an intriguing concept. Thank you for bringing this up.

Codes are great at data collection, bulk processing and sorting but as of the current moment, haven't reached the "empathy" which the human factor brings. If we assume noni can be enabled to a slightly higher level of code than present, then it would be amazing to use noni to filter quickly through potentially thousands of conversations even with a skeletal listener base. Any members/guests would go through noni as a level 1 interaction, provide relevant information which is analyzed based upon level of distress, area of need, etc and then assigned a listener based upon the listeners expertise. e.g for someone who is lonely and just wants a casual conversation, perhaps we don't need a super experienced listener; for someone dealing with trauma or a panic attack, they can be quickly redirected to a seasoned listener without having to try so many listeners who may not be able to help. The noni select-listener process can also be enhanced to incorporate any recent behaviour points on the listener and take that into account before allowing access. It can be a win-win for all to make it a better experience.

so my vote goes to a blended approach!

@0m Sounds wonderful! Humans and bots can both play their respective parts and together create a helpful system for the ones seeking support.

I am concerned that ChatGPT [large language model chatbot] will be used to create member and listener accounts on 7Cups.com

@Fristo I agree! I would rather use my own words and vocabulary, and not sound like a robot. Warm and conversational is what I strive for in chats and forum posts.

Planned and coded all the way for me. With anxiety combined with a type A personality, it’s really the only way I can even talk to people. I don’t mean to be rude, but if it’s not planned in my head, I cannot talk.

One trend I think 7 Cups needs to eliminate Immediately is all of the Listener mods joking around and saying they are AI bots.

#1 - They are lying to the people they are supposed to help.

#2 - I dont like Mods pretending to be my friends one minute, only to scolded for something innocent, like accidentally typing in CAPS 2 seconds later.
and most of all
#3 - What if a person is struggling and to have a mod saying they are a bot triggers their paranoia?

@Positron2 Positron, I agree with this. And, I have run into members who are already fighting with paranoia about alternate realities and such, and I don't think this sort of humour (of real people "pretending" they are bots, or joking about "being" bots) helps matters for these folks.

planned or coded is great for social interactions like going to a grocery store, or going to see the doctor/ unplanned an informal is great when relaxing with friends and family, or sometimes when talking to your therapist (granted you get limited time with them and sometimes planning is also good.

but i also think its important to not always be informal woth those you are close to. I am a big fan of being 100% honest but we also need to consider the feelings and thoughts of those close to us. Something i have been struggling woth but working on is when is an appropriate time to talk aout something with loved ones. Sometimes its just not a good tome and they are busy. Other times i should consider their emotions more before speaking my mind.

@selfconfidentTriangle3354 really good reflections! yes, we need to see where and when we can afford to be more vulnerable.
