" 1. Make sure the change you’re trying to make is the right intensity.

When trying to create habits that lead to weight loss, make sure the change you’re trying to make is not too easy but not too hard. If the habit is too easy, like only having 5 of a particular food instead of six, it may not be easy to maintain. If it’s too hard, like cutting out a particular food completely or limiting it too much, you’ll be more likely to give up on creating the habit.

2. Don’t take the process too seriously.

Our thoughts about food can be amusing if we pay attention. Have you ever thought you love food too much to be slimmer, or you have to clean your plate because wasting food is bad? It’s funny if you think about it. If you don’t want to waste food, take the leftovers home if you’re at a restaurant, or save the rest of your meal for later if you’re eating at home.

3. Make it a game or a competition.

Challenge yourself to create a string of successes. Make or download a habit tracker, and check off each day you accomplish a certain goal, such as exercising for a certain amount of time or eating a certain number of fruits and vegetables.

4. Schedule an off-plan “joy eat” and enjoy it thoroughly.

While working on creating good eating habits, take one day every so often to eat something you love. You could make it a certain day every week or plan to enjoy special meals on special occasions, like birthdays or graduation celebrations.

5. Add music to anything you’re doing that doesn’t seem fun.

Many people often listen to music while they exercise, but it can also make cooking and eating healthy meals fun.

6. Bring the fun.

There are other ways to make weight loss fun. If you know someone else who needs to lose weight, find ways to work out together or get together and enjoy a healthy meal.

7. Convince yourself that weight loss is fun.

You can find all sorts of ways to tell yourself weight loss is fun. You might try repeating to yourself, “I’m enjoying my weight loss journey,” or some other positive affirmation to put yourself in a better mindset. Other affirmations you could use include:

  • I believe in myself and know I can succeed. I have hope and certainty about the future.
  • Everything I eat nourishes and strengthens my body and mind."
