ADHD Strategies - Organizing Tips & Tricks - Accountability Post
Hello! I was inspired to kick off this post the other day from @ouiCherie 's mention of the idea of gathering different ADHD Strategies. My hope is we can make this into an ADHD strategies series and this is the first post in the series.
Thanks for stopping by!
While medication can help some people manage the symptoms of ADHD, it is not a cure, nor is it the only solution. If it is decided it is needed, (between you and your doctor), it should be used in conjunction with other treatments or self-help strategies. Not much or nothing will change if we still approach tasks with neurotypical strategies. That’s why it’s important to get as many tools in our toolboxes as we can and try and figure out which strategies work best for us individually. What may work for you, might not work for me, and vice versa.
Some main traits of ADHD are inattention and distractibility. As you can imagine and most of us know first hand, organizing is probably the biggest challenge that adults with ADHD face. Just the idea of getting organized, whether at work or home, can leave some of us ADHD folks feeling overwhelmed.
By implementing various structures and routines, and taking advantage of various tools, we can set ourselves up to maintain organization and control clutter without feeling overwhelmed.
“People with an ADHD nervous system know that if they get engaged with a task, they can do it. Far from being damaged goods, people with an ADHD nervous system are bright and clever. The main problem is that they were given a neurotypical owner’s manual at birth. It works for everyone else, not for them.” Read more here from ADDitudeMag.
Please see below for 6 ADHD organizing strategies:
Develop structure
Start by categorizing your objects, deciding which are needed on a daily basis for easy access and which can be stored or discarded.
These approaches build on our strengths for lifelong help because it does not try to change our ADHD nervous system into neurotypical people (as if that were possible).
⭐️ Designate spots for items you use most frequently with easy access.
⭐️ If it takes less than 5 minutes, do it now.
⭐️ Handle the mail as soon as possible.
⭐️ Go paperless where possible.
⭐️ Come up with a file system.
⭐️ Keep in mind to continuously throw away things you don’t need.
⭐️ Tip 1. Create space: Think of what you use and need on a daily basis in different areas of your home. Designate specific spots in each area for those things. Examples:
A small table by the front door might be the perfect designated spot for a bowl for any loose items. Add a mail holder next to the bowl. Hang up some hooks just above the table for keys. Add a shelf and before you know it, you have this space that can also be used as a “launchpad” near the front door! Now this space not only acts as a place to stash things in their designated spots, this is also a place household members can have easy access to what they need to grab while walking out the door. Things like backpacks, purses, scarves, keys, etc.
⭐️ Tip 2. Deal with it now. If a task can be done in five minutes or less, do it on the spot, rather than putting it off for later. This helps avoid some stress of forgetfulness and it can help eliminate some clutter or piling up procrastination. Some examples could be:
Fill out paperwork so it’s done and out of the way.
Put things back in their spots as you make a trip past it.
Clean up the messes as they happen.
Return calls immediately.
⭐️ Tip 3. Stay on top of mail each day. If at all possible, as soon as you bring the mail inside, set aside a few minutes to deal with it right away.
⭐️ Tip 4. Go paperless To minimize the amount of paper you have to deal with, go paperless wherever it can make sense for you. Switch over to electronic statements/bills instead of paper mail form where you can. Also, worth mentioning, in the U.S., you can reduce junk mail by opting out of the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service. I did this and it helped some!
⭐️ Tip 5. File system For the records and other papers that you do need to save, use dividers or separate file folders for different types of documents (such as medical records, receipts, and income statements). Label and color-code your files so that you can find what you need easily. This helps put things away easier as well.
⭐️ Tip 6. Make time to get rid of things you no longer use. Have you worn that sweater that’s folded up in the bin in the closet within the last year? No? Is it sentimental? No? Donate it! Make a donation pile, load it up into the car right away, and plan to drop it off ASAP.

@FlourishingDimensions
Hey Flo, I Love your post! Clever idea for motivation, support and accountability!
Since you asked for 1 - 3 things, I decided to go with on from each area of my life (Personal, Home, Cups)
1. Figure out a plan for my morning routine.
2. Create my room into a space that is relaxing, revitalizing and helps to ground me.
3. Oh boy, just one task for today? LOL!! I think my focus task for today will be to check in with people that I work with and also that I support to see how they are, anything they need help with, or just to say "Hey, I thought of you today!"
By the way, as you do your daily update posts here, please feel free to tag me at the bottom just so I don't forget to come back and post my update as well (until I get into the habit of it, lol).
Hope you and everyone else reading has a Wonderful day and I look forward to seeing y'all again tomorrow!
~ Sher
@Sher217 Oh my gosh these are great!
I updated the post and made sure to tag you at the bottom! thanks for your help and guidance on everything :)
Update Thurs 6/3
From previous post:
1. Have a plan in progress; Giving it a test run for effectiveness. 2. Started project and making very good process. 3. Yay! Was able to either connect with or leave a message for those on my list.
For today (same personal, home, Cups order)
1. (Have been doing this already today) Listening when my body says it's time to take a break and rest.
2. (Already in progress too) Relocate and set up my computer and desk.
3. Spend some quality time working on projects and roles, so I'm prepared for the weekend.
@lueurspace Thank you so much for remembering the tag 💜 I DID forget to check in, lol. This is something that I want to continue doing with you all 💜💜💜

This is such a great thread! (I will be honest, I read it the day it was made and I procrastinated on replying to it even though I knew it wouldn't take so long xD) I am happy to see an accountability thread. I would love to use some of the things you have mentioned, there are different kinds of tasks that I need to do and oftentimes they are not 5 minutes or less. Guess, I will have to think of a new system for that one! The paperless one is a great point, I personally have papers flying around for such random things but these days most of it is done digitally so yay for that!
The 3 things I need to do today (it's already past 5 pm here but I still have some things I need to be doing so I will mention them):
1. Make my weekly forum post
2. Schedule things I need to do since I have a lot of free time, figure out how to create a good balance between 7Cups and real-life
3. Prepare for college entrance examinations
(@Sher217 tagging you cause you said you need to be reminded, hehe)
You can't give your life more time, so give the time you have, more life.
@lueurspace I am not sure what I used to do before paperless options? I am still drowning in the mail even with everything possible set as paperless
I am somewhat better with it though! I have to consistently remember to do these tips and tricks, or I can sink fast. The struggle is real for me.
Thanks for the kind words about this thread, and good luck with your 3 things! :D

A tip I would like to share:
I keep a small note pad and pen on my bedside table for when I have a thought of something I need to do the next day or something that I don't want to forget.
This is what I call my "brain dump" space. It allows me to capture any thoughts I may be worrying over. I can then rest assured that they will be right where I left them in the morning.
As part of my morning routine, I check my list for things I need to take care of.
I hope someone may find this tip helpful too.
~ Sher
@Sher217
I have started to get in the habit of jotting things down that I need to do as a way to stop stressing about remembering them. Often times I do that for work things I remember or think about randomly. Then I make a deal with myself that since it's jotted down, I am letting it go until tomorrow when I can take care of it. That way it's out of my mind and I am not stressing about it.
However, I really like the concept of jotting down all of these things for goals and to-do lists for the next day and start checking it out as part of my routine when I start my day.
Thanks for the tip! 🤗
@FlourishingDimensions
Hey Flo ! I don't get online much Fri and over the weekend but I wanted to check in to let you know that I didn't forget!
So quick update: 1) Have been able to find a rhythm of work hard then rest (and repeat) 2) Have my desk and computer area all set up (Yay!!) and 3) Had some awesome planning and organizing time over the weekend
So for tomorrow (Tues) my goals are:
1. Continue my streak of having a healthy breakfast and 16 oz of water in the mornings (started over the weekend)
2. Clean out under my kitchen sink, lol (I have to replace faucet & hoses this weekend... uugghhh)
3. Update my calendar with all meetings and responsibilities until the end of June (so I can see where I have time available and can factor in 'down time')
