Anxiety, if it is disabling enough, can qualify you to apply for benefits to help you out! You can't just say you have anxiety to get it, you have to have a medical diagnosis and your anxiety must be disabling enough where you can't function in your everyday life or must do two of the following: Marked problems maintaining concentration. Marked difficulties with persistence, or pace; Repeated periods of decompensation, each of extended duration; Marked difficulties maintaining social functioning; or restriction of routine activities of daily life.

@BurningEmber, Anxiety is not a disability and if you want to claim it as a disability, call it disorder not disability. There is a lot of difference between a disorder and disability. Everything is not disability in this world.

Disability is like when you dont have both hands or one hand or one leg or you can't speak or hear or see. While disorder is a medical condition . In appearance they aren't either blind or can hear or see and dont have any loss of legs or hands. For-example : Bipolar Disorder, PTSD,etc.

thats where youre wrong. Disability isnt just a physical thing. Disorders can be disabling. Hence disability benefits. But this isnt a debating thread. We can agree to disagree. :)

@ItsPreeti There are many ways that disabilities are looked at. They can include both impairments and disorders.

Generally, when it comes to things like benefits, social programs, etc. they look at how difficult someone has managing certain tasks, the underlying cause is often less important.

@ItsPreeti

Anxiety and ptsd can be a disability if it impacts you so deeply you cannot do daily function. You must have this acknowledged by at least three doctor, one must work for the society security office.

They will try therapist and/or meds first.

This process can take years.

@BurningEmber

Anxiey should not be called a disability and if it does disable in some cases it should be in another category. Thats all I'm saying that anxiety shoulnt be labeled as disability just because in some cases it disables you.

Anxiety isn't being labeled as a disability. The thing that is being labeled as a disability is the severity it has on an individual.

To be honest I think it can be difficult to get on disability benefits with a mental illness

For instance I tried to when I had bad ADHD but they still were not convinced enough, even though i had bad concentration issues that affected my academics. However my sister, who has Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar disorders was able to get on disability .

@mimameid, it depends--- like if you have more than 40% of it then its termed on disabled certificate.If less then not.

I have lived with anxiety my whole life. Never feeling like I was enough. I struggled to find my place and my way. It is still a struggle but I have learned coping skills and am on a great medication that has helped me to finally feel more like myself.
