Accepting my diagnosis

Hey all. I got my diagnosis for anxiety and ptsd about two weeks ago. I'm still having quite a hard time accepting it and understanding what it all means. Can someone offer some words of encouragement? Tell me it will be alright, that you can live with it? That it will get better?

It will be alright. You won't have to live with it because it will get better.

Anxiety and PTSD are well understood conditions with well established treatments that have been widely researched and really work. Last week you wrote about having EMDR and intensive therapy. That's exactly the right approach to get you through this.

As for understanding it, your therapist will be the best person to ask. In general, anxiety and PTSD are believed to be caused by thought processes going wrong in some way in your mind. Therapists are skilled in working with you to find the thought processes that have gone wrong and helping you to fix them. No one knows exactly how EMDR works, but it seems to make the treatment a lot quicker and easier, especially when thinking about how you may have been affected by difficult past events.

I know therapists who do this work. Their patients get better. And I know people who have had treatment for these conditions and who got better.
