Anxiety Being Alone

User Profile: rene9250
rene9250 April 9th, 2020

It's been like 3 days since my breakup and it's been really hard, especially being alone. I haven't been single in awhile cause I always jump into relationships quickly, and now with the pandemic, I'm forced to be single and alone. I just don't know how to handle it I guess. I realized that I've lost any desire to sit down and just watch a movie or read. I have to keep moving, to distract myself from negative thoughts. But i want to be able to watch tv and read again-- like this blows, i cant ever relax. Sitting down, my thoughts come to me SO quickly and make me so sad that I always start crying and thus have panic attacks. In the moments where I'm alone with my thoughts, especially at night, I think about him, I think about how lonely I am, I have the urge from boredom to call him or at least text him. He helped me through my darkest moments this past year, he knew how exactly to comfort me, and now he's not here... I do realize that we shouldn't text because it just doesn't let us move on, but also sometimes I just want him to be a part of my life. Basically, I just want to be okay again, I want to be okay with myself, I want to accept everything, I want to move on, I want to build healthy relationships. I just don't know how...

Hello @rene9250. Breakups are hard are their own without a pandemic causing additional stress and strain on our mental health. I'm sorry that this is happening now of all times and you're struggling with the changes. I remember how hard it was for me to sit down and do something like watch a movie after my ex broke up with me. I would put something on but I never paid attention. I spent my days just crying until I fell asleep and wake up to do it again. Basically I was a mess! It sounds like you are already doing better than I did and I think that's absolutely amazing of you! You might not be ready to sit down and relax right but you are still moving around and staying active. The reason watching tv or reading sound impossible at the moment is because you are afraid to let your mind wander. Sitting down and relaxing gives your mind the opportunity to think of your ex and to think of the things you miss.

Firstly I want to address the panic attacks. Because expereince has told me that they are the worst part of all of this. If you're struggling with panic attacks, try to control your breathing when the panic first sets in. when we panic, we breath fast and shallow and it signals to the body that something is wrong. So instead of yelling at yourself to calm down, just focus on your breath. Try to inhale a looooooong, deeeeep breath. Hold it.... and release it in an equally slow manner. I find it helpful to have animations on my phone to control my breathing. When I do it on my own, I feel like I'm going slow and it turns out I'm really not going as slowly as I should be to come down from an attack. Watching something like this helps:

Another fast way to deal with panic attacks is to shock the system. When I was suffering from frequent panic attacks someone told me to take a COLD shower, plunge my face into cold water or even splashing myself repeatedly. Problem was that my attacks usually occured on campus so I never really gave this method a fair try. But since you're home, this might be really helpful. The logic behind it is that you will be so concerned about the temperature of the water that you won't be able to focus on your train of thought that led to the panic attack. Basically you cut the train of thought off before you start spiraling.

One last strategy that I want to share is finding alternative ways to expel the nervous energy. One person told me that screaming at the top of their lungs really made them feel better when they felt an attack coming on. Because panic attacks often make us feel like we're not in control, they argued that screaming and getting angry allowed them to still have some control or authority over the negative feelings. Again, my attacks happened on a college campus so I didn't give this strategy a shot. But I would argue that the energy can be expelled with other forms of agression to folow this person's logic. Stomping your feet, pretending you are kickboxing (punches and kicks) might be what you need for the situation.

Now to go back to the bulk of your post: the emotions involved in a breakup. I know that lonliness all to well. I didn't go through a break up as recently as you but I still have these thoughts of wanting to go back. Like your ex did with you, my ex helped me through a lot of dark moments in my own life. He was such a strong symbol of support in my life that all I could think about when I was dealing with the break up, was that he would know how to make me feel better. It's nice to have that support in the relationship but it's hard to lose that support when it ends. There are conflicting emotions of wanting that person to comfort you because you feel terrible but an understanding that you feel terrible in that moment BECAUSE of them.

I can sympathize with those feelings and I think I have survived the worst of the breakup. Much like the oh too common advice, it got better with time for me. I have no doubt that it will for you too. I just wish I had more to offer you now. I can start by saying if you feel like you need to talk to someone (or more specifically you feel like you need to talk to your ex) feel free to talk to me. This is something I went through recently. It's something I am still dealing with. I am more than happy to talk things through with you. Would you want to tell me more about what happened?

Hi, thank you so much, this means a LOT! I will definitely try to use these panic attack relievers. And yes, I would be open to talking to you more. Is there some way for me to direct message you? I'm new to this app.

@rene9250 Unfortunately I'm not a listener so I can't message you directly. I'm here as a member and I can communicate with you here on this thread if sharing openly is something you're comfortable doing. There's no pressure if you aren't. If you would like to speak privately instead, there are many listeners here who have expertise when dealing with break ups so I'm sure you'll get paired with someone who can empathize and offer you support. ❤

Ok! That makes sense. I am open to sharing on this thread... so in a nutshell, I had a toxic relationship before my current ex and when I got out of it, I lost a lot of my self worth, I developed anxiety, I had panic attacks every day, I partied/messed around with other dudes for a few weeks in college. When I met my current ex, he knew how to pull me out. He went through a lot in high school and he knew how to get out because now, hes so content with life and honestly, the happiest person Ive ever met- and that made me want to get there too. I think after awhile I became dependent on him for that and happiness. Eventually, I fell in love with him, but when reality hit us, we started having a lot of relationship problems. We didnt see eye to eye on a lot of things, I was more of the one mad about things cause he didnt seem like hed put enough effort into us anymore. Maybe I pushed him away, but also I just wanted to know that hes the one. He just didnt feel enough, and maybe thats because of my other insecurities, but I found myself getting less satisfied in the relationship. I feel like Ive mostly accepted the outcome and I feel like I know what I want romantically in the future and its not him and I shouldnt count on ever getting back with him. Thats why I broke things off, but then realized that same day, after us talking in the car, that I wanted him back - probably out of desperation and hurt. But, eventually we made the decision to move on... and like two days ago, I told him we couldnt text regularly anymore so I havent spoken to him. I know I made the right decision for the most part, but I do keep on checking on his social media if he posted anything, not sure if I should, and I found out that hes still wearing the matching necklace I gave him. Idk it makes me sad...

I have also been on tinder and have found him on it and he keeps changing his bio to add more emphasis on trying to find a relationship or "the one" right now which hurts.

@rene9250 You have every right to feel sad. In a way, you're mourning. I'm sorry that you've been going through this, not just the recent breakup but the toxic relationship you had before. That's a lot to process for one person and this says a lot about your strength to be handling it as well as you have. You might feel like you haven't but trust me you are doing very well considering the circumstances.

I'm sorry that your relationship with your recent ex didn't last. It sounds like he was there when you needed him most but ultimately you weren't meant to end up together. That's always a difficult lesson to accept. I'm proud of you for doing what was best for both of you despite how difficult it was. I know how hard that can be when we become dependent on a person to carry us through the tough moments. I too depended on my ex to help me get through anxiety attacks and my depressive episodes. He was the first one I would call when things were good in my life or really bad. In my situation, I wasn't as strong as you to admit our faults. I choose to ignore our problems and I tried carrying on until he untimately ended things with me. I didn't truly understand that we weren't meant to be until I was forced to face that truth.

It's confusing when our heart and our head tell us different things. I know it's confusing when you both know you can't go back but you really wish you could. I also checked my ex's social media profile for a while after we separated. I posted my own thread in anger when I saw something I didn't like online: proof he was moving on. But I admit it wasn't as bad as seeing his tinder online again. That's terrible and I'm sorry that he did that to you so soon. Despite what his bio says, I doubt that your ex really feels that way. If he really was ready to go out and find someone, he wouldn't still be holding on to a gift you gave him. Like you, he'll need time to process and recover. I wonder if he's writing what he knows would be painful for you to read because he knows you'll see it? It does seem like the perfect message to cut you the deepest. But I don't know your ex well enough to know if he would think that way.

I know you said that being alone in quarantine has been difficult and you haven't been able to sit and watch television or read books. What have you been doing to keep busy?

@SecretlyMe

Yeah, I feel like I'm definitely accepting the situation a lot more and moving on, and thank you for your response! Honestly, I don't think he would act malicious, but I think both of us being on Tinder is just our way of distracting ourselves from the hurt and it helps me realize that there are other people out there, not just him (and no, I'm not looking for anything serious). Currently, I'm working out pretty regularly, painting, finally taking journaling again- which is one of the biggest things that is helping me, I am able to watch tv again :) I think I'm moving on, like if I'm reminded of him, I know that he wasn't the one and I'll never forget our love... I think the last time we'll see each other is when we have to give each other our stuff back and I think that'll be closure.

@rene9250 I'm so glad to hear that. Sounds like you have been making a lot of progress since your original post. You've been keeping busy, you've been keeping your distance, and you've accepted the situation. smiley

I'm glad that you've been able to use this time to restart journaling. I found that journaling helped me a lot when I was at my worst, not just with the breakup but with my anxiety and depression as well. I try to recommend it to as many people as I can who are looking for new ways to deal with a difficult situation. But you already know how helpful it is :)

And yeah, I think journaling is always one of the best solutions :))

Thank you for your advice and support!! It was VERY helpful :)

@rene9250 Those moments of thinking about him will linger for a while. I admit that I still think about my ex and occasionally my mind wanders to an imaginary scenario where we're still together. Those are difficult moments to endure but they occur less and less frequently as time goes on. If you are going through one of those moments and you want to talk about it, I - among other amazing users on 7 cups - are here to help you get through it. Whether it's for advice or just a listening ear, don't be afraid to reach out in the moments when you feel like your resolve is being tested.

Yeah :/ I got reminded of him today when this lady emailed me about doing a follow-up survey about the couples study we did a few months ago... I got a little bummed and proceeded to go through memories of us :( also I'm not sure if should look through his social media and stuff? Like I can't figure out why I keep doing that from time to time.

@rene9250 I did the same things too. I was scrolling through my gallery to look at pictures we took together and I was looking at his social media profiles because his picture was one of us together. In my case, it didn't offer any good to check his social media that way. It was inevitable for it to happen but it still hurt so much the day I looked at his profile and realized that he had changed it to something new. He was going out and having fun with friends while I was still thinking of him. It would have been better if I didn't know.

But I understand the compulsions. I spent long days after the breakup wanting to see him so I went to his social media, I looked at pictures and reminisced on our time together, I listened to an old voicemail on my phone to hear him call me by my pet name again and to hear him to say "I love you". At the time it felt like those little activities were carrying me through each day but looking back, it made it harder for me to move on. Reminiscing on fond memories surrounding the pictures I had saved didn't allow me to spend enough time thinking about the problems we faced in the relationship. Thinking about what I missed about him didn't allow me time to think about the way we clashed as a couple.

I can understand how something like the email you got can spark memories of him. Just be careful not to fall into a fantasy of misremembering how the relationship truly was. You can look fondly on the good moments but don't forget the struggles that led to the separation in the first place. This is an opportunity to reflect on yourself and your relationship. It sounds like you already know what you are looking for/not looking for in a relationship. Don't forget about what you need when you find yourself missing him.

@rene9250 I know somewhat how you feel. I haven't had a breakup or even a romantic relationship before, but I understand feeling alone. I've lost many friends before under lots of different circumstances, but none of them have been good. I know what it's like to feel like that one person you could count on is gone. But you have to trust that things happen for a reason. You'll get through this. Be grateful for the relationships you have. Leave the old one with love, thinking about all of the joy and good memories it's brought you. Stay in touch with others via social media and messaging.

I don't know if this helps, but I hope so

@rene9250 it's always hard going through a breakup especially after they help you through so many hard thoughts and feelings. I'd imagine it might feel like you can't get through it alone after they helped you so much, but just know that although people on here can't be there in person we're all right here ready to listen and talk. We've all gone through our own hardships and come out stronger in the end with a better sense of what we need to help ourselves feel better. Everything is going to be okay, we're here to listen :)
