Hi, I've always suffered with a slight stutter my whole life and it is always worse when I'm nervous. I don't know anyone else who stutters and would be nice to talk about it. Just wondering if anyone had any good tips?

James Earl Jones use to stutter. If you do not know who that is he was the voice of Darth Vader. Birdie queen Elizabeth's father stuttered. They made a movie about how he was taught to over come it's called the kings speech. I wish I could help you more but don't be ashamed we all have something to over come. I have dyslexia and didn't get diagnosed until college I just never understood why I studied all the time and would fail or barely pass a test. For years I just thought I was stupid. Turns I'm not. Just have to learn a different way and adapt.

I stutter as well. Consequently or vice versa, I’ve developed social phobia approx. 5 years go. But you know what? It started subsiding after i started working in the customer service - purposely to “cure” my stutter. The amount of embarrassing situations I’ve had cannot be enlisted here - there’s too many of them. I remember crying and slapping myself during work in the restroom because I couldn’t regain composure and stop stammering while talking to clients. So,, now it’s vanishing little by little, not having gone completely. It’s still there, but in a somewhat milder form. And the point is - a bold look at he fear and a resilient go inside its claws

@RandomBeany I don't personally know if there's one "right" way to make it easier, but I've found that slowing down my speech, focusing on breathing before speaking, and allowing myself to pause can help in stressful moments. Some people also practice reading out loud in a safe and quiet environment.

What situations tend to feel most challenging for you?

Thank you for sharing that it takes courage to open up about something so personal. You’re definitely not alone in experiencing a stutter, and many people find it becomes more noticeable when they’re feeling nervous. While I’m not a speech therapist, some people find it helpful to practice speaking slowly, pausing to take a breath, and focusing on what they want to say rather than how it comes out.
