Stress Awareness Discusson: Coping Techniques
ohkeh so we just had this post where we shared our worries, yes?
the more abstract things were:
- going outside (wot is the root cause of this tho? how can we take baby steps here & break this down further :O)
- school stoofles (which is combination of stuffs yah?)
- relationship stoofles.
while more specifically what causes us anxiety is:
- decisions
- uncertainty
- new stuffs
- human beans in general
- caring for ill loved ones
- health concerns
- being late for stuff & feeling behinds
soooo okay i want you to imagine three scenarios and tell me wot you would do for each of them yeah? to mitigate the immediate effects and work your way from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 or 3 to 4 yah? :o
or what you think would be healthy. & we can kinda snuggle to a consensus :3
1) you are having a panic attack
2) just in general you are feeling very strained from the constant worry
3) you are doing well and don't really feel anything besides slight uncomfortableness
4) you are proactively managing your anxiety and preventing issues before they build up
Grounding Technique:
A good grounding tehcnique that I like to use is finding 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This pertains to all of your senses, and allows you to calm down by focusing on what is around you, giving you comfort of knowing where you are, and shows your brain there is no immediate danger, that you are safe, it doesn't always work for everyone, but it works for me. :)
Deep Breathing:
Another technique I use is a deep breathing one, probably most common, or popular, I use this one often as well when nothing seems to be working. I inhale for four counts, hold it for 7 and exhale for four counts. This one is great during panic attacks, as it can reset your breathing, prevent hyperventilation, and relax the mind and body, which is exactly what we are aiming for :)
Music:
I am hesitant to talk about this one, as it only works for some, and certian musics can be triggering, however, music is a good distractor right before you have a panic attack and sometimes may calm you down, I alternatively suggest ASMR. For those who dont know it, they are sounds that trigger relaxiotion in the brain, such as mic tapping, crinkles etc. They also have whispering or non whispering ASMRS, it is avalible on YouTube and Spotify, they also use it to promote good sleep.
I really hope this helps <3
@MissSkeleton
@MissSkeleton I'm saving this post. Really great ideas—thanks!
@MissSkeleton
This is absolutely great! If you're okay with it, I'd like to add something to this.
Mudras, hand positions which are practised during meditation or yoga practises, can really help to ground yourself. There are a couple, usually the ones in which all fingers are enstrangled with one another, that make me feel really safe, like I'm holding myself. It can be good to hold a mudra when you are doing your deep breathing or when you're trying to calm down and don't feel comfortable with others holding you.

This link explains several that help with the emotional wellbeing. But if you're really interested, I encourage you to take a look online yourself too. For some of you it might be beneficial

No problmeo :D
@bunnypants This is a great post. Thank you!
@bunnypants
1) you are having a panic attack- Ground myself by remembering that a panic attack only lasts 15 minutes, walk around, change enviornments and keep in mind I have been here before :)
2) just in general you are feeling very strained from the constant worry- Talk it out! Tell someone and let them know what I am worrying about.
3) you are doing well and don't really feel anything besides slight uncomfortableness- Once symptoms start, I avoid things I know are triggers and take a few minute walk or blast a favorite song. I know by working things out mentally it helps, but for me, physcial has to be done as well or that addrenaline will just release.
4) you are proactively managing your anxiety and preventing issues before they build up- Taking care of my body by eating healthy, following a routine and trying to get enough sleep. Also talking when I know something is bothering me so I don't dwell on it.
