Wanted to say hi

I'm trying to figure out what I can do that's free to help as I was told years ago I had borderline personality disorder and I didn't take it seriously until now. I'm going to try DBT as I did CBT long ago and I guess when you don't use them practices all the time you do slip back so I'm trying to figure out what else I can do to help

Hi @Nickwolfie

I don't know much about this disorder, but for mental health in general journalling really helps me. Have you tried talking to a listener, or other parts of this site? I don't have much experience with listeners but I know I have heard that some people have trouble finding a listener if they have BPD. I recommend trying to form helpful questions to ask.

@amanda84 @jesusredeemedme2425 you wouldn't happen to have any other resources or could you tag others?

I haven't tried it, I was debating it as it may be nice to speak it out but it's also scary in a way as I don't want to deflect during a talk with someone. I want to own up to my mistakes completely. I'll look into it through so thank you

Welcome to 7 Cups! I hope it is helpful!

There may be support groups in your area? Usually those are free.

Do you have any of your old worksheets from when you did CBT before?

DBT sounds great for you! I did DBT for 18 months back in 2016-2017.

Ask any questions you have!

I like the suggestion someone made about the CBT worksheets. Those practices were really helpful to me for a good while. (They might have been the only thing that I felt like made a dent.)

I haven't been actually diagnosed as Borderline, and I'm not self-diagnosing either, but I seem to fit the bill, and I know what it's like to have suffered with those symptoms all my life. That said, CBT was the beginning for me... I think what's helped the most since then is redirecting myself.

To explain that, I... Just started focusing energy in things that train me. Like, swimming/kendo/basketball for my body, things like language learning/creative writing/reading for my mind. Stuff like that... But instead of making that a manic obsession, I try to spend as much energy on people I care about (or my pets). I feel like I've kind of become a better and stronger person.

Does it make the BPD symptoms go away? No, I struggle horribly still, but... I feel more capable about it, and it's easier to remember the people I care about... It's also kind of like seeing my mental state from a bird's eye view, and having a dim awareness of how much damage my actions can do - it helps me snap out of it.

Anyway, I feel like what I'm saying could be either really helpful or really unhelpful. Either way, I'm open for discussion on it, and I hope you get the help you need, however it comes!

Thanks for sharing.

I managed to find a therapist and she wants me to focus on one chapter a time of my DBT for a week putting what I put into practice over that week. Before starting the new. Last time I went through CBT and I just read and read putting notes down. I didn't take the time like I'm doing this time.

As for putting time into people and pets. That's what I'm trying to do too. I'm playing with the dog more and giving the cats more playtime as well as trying to do things to help my wife with her stress.

Yes seeing the damage I caused and also seeing that my family's behavior towards relationships and people have shown me I need to make the changes.

I hope you're well and things continue to get easier for you during your journey too
