7) Article Outlining

User Profile: SoulfullyAButterfly
SoulfullyAButterfly March 5th, 2025

This discussion aims to present some tips for the article outlining process - it is a general discussion and you are not limited to using these techniques but are welcome to share your personal experiences and suggestions in the forum replies!

  1. Brainstorming

  • Brainstorm the need for your content piece - establish your idea and consider what the content needs to contain by asking yourself the purpose of the content piece and what your audience would like to know through your work.
  • Moreover, consider auditing existing content to find opportunities for interconnected content as well as to find ideas for further enhancing your content collection.
  • For example, you can browse through the current Expert articles available at 7 Cups and consider what related or supporting content works can be developed.
  1. Developing a Concrete Idea

  • After brainstorming the need for your content work, develop a concrete idea to support your proposed title. A concrete idea is simply what purpose you intend to fulfill through your content.
  • In other words, be clear about what you would like to include within your content article.
  1. Listing Main Points

  • Consider listing the main points of what you would like to include in your content article: you can consider starting with major subheadings and their supporting points, or just a general list of points you would like to include and research.
  1. Descriptions of Main Points

  • After forming the list of main points, consider adding small details or descriptions about what that point should contain or answer - these descriptions can include pointers on what to research, questions, etc.
  • After writing the list and descriptions, consider where you want to add expert quotes and what type of expert you can contact.
  • Moreover, consider creating a brief list of existing content you can use and backlink to.
  • You can edit your outline to include any new things that come up during your research for other points, but it is recommended to keep your content within your outline/concrete idea after creating it.

Need help with your outline? Consider emailing ayesha@7cups.com for support.

@Grace3012

This is a really well-structured and thoughtful outline, Grace! You’ve covered the key aspects of awareness, recognition, and healing in a way that makes the topic approachable and informative. I love how you’ve broken down each section with clear subpoints—this makes it easy to follow and ensures comprehensive coverage of the topic. I love that you included how to speak to a survivor, as that is often overlooked and is so very necessary!

One thing you might consider is adding expert voices or survivor testimonials where appropriate to strengthen credibility and emotional impact. Also, in the prevention section, incorporating some real-world examples of successful awareness programs could be a great touch.

Overall, this is an excellent foundation for a powerful and impactful article—great job! 😊

Thank you for sharing such a well-thought-out and structured outline, Lovely. You've clearly put care into identifying the purpose of your article and outlining practical, accessible strategies that will resonate with readers. Your progression from defining self-care to offering actionable tips, and finally encouraging a culture of self-care, is both logical, empathetic, and needed in today's society. We often throw around the term "self-care", but many don't understand what it means for them, and you help bridge that knowledge gap! 😊

The inclusion of barriers, real-life examples, and further resources shows great depth and audience awareness. Excellent work! This is a strong foundation for an engaging and supportive article! ⭐

Article Outlining

Title:

Human Trafficking and Sex Labor

Purpose:

I found it  interesting and am always intrigued by how people can be so cruel to other people and why they get treated like they do. Trafficking is a worldwide problem and there should be more awareness, and it should be a more talked-about subject.

Main Points:

1. What is human trafficking and the different types?

2.  Domestic servitude, sexual, labor, different genders, and ages.

3. Quotes: Trafficking in Persons reported a total of 19,929 identified victims in 2014 across 81 countries and all trafficking types. Such identified cases undoubtedly represent just a fraction of the true trafficking problem. Notably, the report highlighted the changing composition of cases identified between 2004 and 2014. For example, the proportion of male victims and child victims both increased over this period (respectively from 13% to 21% and 13% to 28%) and the share of sex trafficking victims fell (from 59% to 54%). These and other such changes are thought to reflect an evolution in how human trafficking is understood and a move away from the dominant focus on ‘women trafficked from afar into an affluent country for sexual exploitation.’. The report also found clear variations between regions in the types of trafficking identified, demonstrating that ‘[g]lobal averages mask marked regional differences’ and highlighting the need for geographically-specific enquiries (Cockbain & Bowers, 2019)

4. Quote: The total number of referrals received annually virtually tripled between 2013 (n = 1745) and 2017 (n = 5145). Meanwhile, police in England and Wales recorded 3337 modern slavery offenses in the year ending March 2018, up 49% on the previous year (police in Scotland and Northern Ireland recorded another 60 and 31, respectively). (Cockbain & Bowers, 2019)

5.) Human trafficking traumatizes them, scars them for life, ruins their relationships with others.

6.) Human trafficking can happen to anyone anywhere.

7. If you know someone or have gone through this, contact 7 Cups; there are listeners who will help you and we have other things that will help and teach you how to cope with them and to express your emotions and other mental health issues.

Hey @Rose1324

Thank you so much for diving into such a powerful and necessary topic. Human trafficking is heartbreaking, and I really appreciate your commitment to raising awareness and educating others, as this is how real change begins. 💛

You’ve laid out a strong starting framework here:

Your purpose is genuine and heartfelt, and readers will feel that passion coming through.

Youve identified key angles like types of trafficking, the global scope, and lasting trauma, which gives your piece emotional weight and educational depth.

Those quotes and statistics from Cockbain & Bowers are excellent - reliable, relevant, and thought-provoking. They add solid credibility to your article, so great job pulling those in early!

Here are a couple of ideas to help polish your outline:

Consider giving your main points a bit more structure by maybe using clear subheadings (e.g., Types of Trafficking, Regional Patterns, Impact on Survivors, Support and Resources). This can help the article flow more clearly.

For your 7 Cups mention, love the inclusion! Maybe think about placing it in a “Support & Resources” section at the end so it lands as a comforting and empowering close? Obviously this is personal preference, so just a thought!

If you can, try noting where you might include survivor stories, expert quotes, or research findings in more of the sections. That’ll help you deepen the article's impact and E-A-T even further.

You're really onto something meaningful here. Keep developing it, you’re shining light on something that needs to be seen. 🌟

Hey @HealingKitty!

WOW!! This is such a thoughtful and well-developed outline! You've clearly put a lot of care into crafting something meaningful, and it really shows. The title is super engaging, and your purpose is clear, helpful, and focused right from the start. Love that!

A few highlights I really appreciated:

You’ve balanced depth and structure beautifully. Each section builds on the last, and I can already imagine how smoothly the article will flow.

Including practical tools like affirmations, mindfulness exercises, and social media tips makes the article really action-oriented - this is gold for readers who want more than just information.

The "How to Assist Others" and "Long-Term Strategies" sections are a lovely touch—it shows compassion for both the reader and their wider circle, which adds a lot of emotional value.

Also, amazing job thinking ahead about resource lists. Those external links will boost both trust and usefulness!

If you want to push it even further, you could add a brief note in the outline about where you might insert expert quotes or personal stories - just to layer in that extra E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness). But honestly, this is already shaping up to be an empowering and insightful piece.

Can’t wait to see the full article! It’s going to help a lot of people feel seen and supported! ✨😊

@Cnguyen1

Hey @Cnguyen1! 😊

Thanks for sharing your outline. It’s a solid start, and I love that you're tackling such an important and often overlooked aspect of depression. You've clearly begun thinking about both structure and resources, which is fantastic!

A few thoughts to help strengthen your outline even more:

Great job including questions like “Why it’s important?” and “What makes it hard to detect?”, those are exactly the kinds of guiding points that help keep your article purposeful and audience-focused. 👍

Nice use of credible sources like Hopkins! Just make sure you note down the specific articles or titles you'll be referring to so you can easily find and cite them later.

You might consider organizing your bullet points a little more clearly under subheadings (like: Symptoms, Diagnosis, When to Seek Help, etc.), this will help create a natural flow and make sure you’re covering things without overlapping.

Love that you brought in a quote from a scholarly source! That shows you’re already thinking about how to weave in authority and depth. Just be sure you clarify where it might fit in your article so it feels intentional.

You're on the right track, and with a bit more structure and detail, this outline will be a super strong base for writing. Keep going! You’ve got this! 💪

Title: 3 Tips to Accomplish Your Short and Long Term Goals

Purpose: This article is to help readers overcome procrastination and build better habits so they can effectively accomplish both short-term and long-term goals. It emphasizes the importance of motivation, mindset, and small behavioral changes, offering practical strategies to make goal achievement more manageable and sustainable.

Main Points & Descriptions:

1. Strong Desire and Clarity Are Key to Success

Achieving goals requires wanting them, treating failure as not an option, and having a clear, focused sense of values and direction.

2. Reward-Based Motivation Helps Build Habits

People are motivated by rewards. Creating a reward system (e.g. a healthy treat after a workout) can help reinforce good behaviors until they become habits.

3. Small Habit Changes Lead to Bigger Shifts

Changing one simple habit (like putting on sneakers in the morning) can trigger larger changes (like exercising consistently).

4. Behavior is Often "All or Nothing"

Positive habits tend to cluster. People who do one productive thing (such as making their bed) are more likely to engage in other positive behaviors (such as doing laundry or exercising).

Thank you for your outline, Shell! You've chosen an important and impactful topic, and your structure covers key areas that will help inform readers about depression in a clear and supportive way. Your points address both understanding and action, which is great for creating an informative and helpful guide. To take it a step further, you might consider refining your purpose to be a bit more specific (providing support strategies, certain demographics, etc.) and expanding your outline slightly with brief descriptions under each heading.

It may be good to swap the ordering, so the article didn't end on the consequences of depression, but perhaps on the more positive note of how to support people with it? This will help clarify your intent and ensure your article stays focused and effective. Great start! :)

Imagine transforming the 7 Cups platform into a serene, ever-evolving island much like the world of Animal Crossing, where users' engagement in supportive listening, offering encouragement, and participating in wellness activities directly contributes to the growth and beautification of their personal virtual haven and a shared community space. This gamified approach leverages principles from Self-Determination Theory, fostering users' intrinsic motivation by addressing their fundamental psychological needs: the sense of competence as their island flourishes with each helpful interaction and skill learned, the feeling of relatednessthrough visiting others' islands and contributing to a collective well-being, and the perception of autonomy* in choosing how they contribute and customize their digital sanctuary. By transforming potentially daunting mental health engagement into a delightful, rewarding journey of small, consistent steps, we aim to cultivate sustained participation and a deeper sense of achievement, echoing the sentiment that "The greater the sense of competence, relatedness, and autonomy, the more engaged, healthy, and high quality the behaviour" (Deci & Ryan, 2000).

@Tuliphealing

The proposed outline for Understanding Insomnia: Causes, Effects, and Ways to Cope stands out with its unique selling point-a comprehensive approach. It takes a logical flow that ensures readers will not only understand what insomnia is but also gain insight into its causes, consequences, and practical solutions. This comprehensive approach will leave readers feeling well-informed and prepared to tackle their sleep issues.

The introduction not only aims to clarify the meaning of insomnia and set boundaries around who can be said to suffer from it, but also provides a brief overview of the article's structure. This will give readers a roadmap of what to expect, enabling them to navigate the content more effectively.

The section on "The base of restlessness: What causes Insomnia" is well thought out. It touches on the psychological and emotional roots (such as stress, depression, and anxiety), medical causes, environmental factors, and even food habits. This broad scope ensures that the piece will resonate with a diverse range of readers, as insomnia often stems from multiple contributing factors.

The effects of insomnia portion of the outline adds depth by not only discussing physical and mental health issues, but also the strain it places on social life and relationships. This personalization of the discussion acknowledges that sleep deprivation extends beyond the individual, impacting their interactions and quality of life, making the reader feel understood and accepted.

The section on coping strategies and treatment is the strongest element of the outline. By incorporating a range of practical approaches—ranging from simple lifestyle adjustments (such as establishing bedtime routines, managing screen time, and modifying food habits) to therapeutic interventions like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and medical consultations—the article promises to be both practical and empowering. It recognizes that there is no one-size-fits-all solution, offering readers multiple paths to try, depending on their individual circumstances, and motivating them to take action.

Finally, the conclusion, where you propose sharing your personal experience of overcoming insomnia, adds authenticity and relatability. Readers are often more motivated by real-life stories than by abstract advice; therefore, incorporating a touch of vulnerability will make the piece more engaging, relatable, and trustworthy. This personal story will make the audience feel connected and empathetic, enhancing their reading experience.

Consider using visuals or diagrams to illustrate complex concepts, such as the sleep cycle or the impact of insomnia on the body. This will make the article more engaging and easier to understand for readers, keeping them interested and enhancing their learning experience.
