What is your favourite tale from your home country?
Hey everyone! I just went through some old fairy tales, reminding myself of my childhood and all the beautiful stories my parents have told me. I can tell you, nostalgia really showed up here in a lovely way.
I am very curious to hear one tale you can share with us that is usually being told in your home country. I am from Germany, and my favourite one was "from the fisherman and his wife". Here's a summary:
An unsuccessful fisherman and his wife live in miserable conditions. One day, the fisherman hooks a fish that can talk. The fisherman releases it and goes home. The wife thinks that in this case he could have wished for a decent house after all. She sends the man to the water again, he calls the fish and wishes for a house. As he comes back, the wish is fulfilled. The woman is not satisfied with that, wishes for a bigger and bigger building and more and more power. Finally she is the pope and is still not satisfied. When she expresses the wish to become like God, both end up finding themselves back where it all began.

I remember one story, which I've been narrated to countless times. I guess other people have heard of it too, or atleast, some adaption or version of it.
Here's how it goes:
Once upon a time, there was a woodcutter, who was honest and used to work very hard to earn a living.
One day, while working in a forest, his axe fell down into a very deep lake. It was his only axe, and he didn't have anymore. It made him really sad and he started crying.
Just then, a Goddess emerged from the lake. The woodcutter was shocked to see her, and he couldn't believe what he saw for a moment.
The woodcutter greeted her, and told her, that his axe had fallen down into the lake, and he pleaded her, to fetch it for him, since it was the only axe that he had, and he couldn't make a living without an axe.
The Goddess told her that she would search for it, and so, she went back into the water. She came out a few moments later, with an axe made of gold. The woodcutter couldn't believe yet again what he saw. The Goddess asked him, if that was his axe. The woodcutter replied that it wasn't his axe, and that his axe was made of wood.
The Goddess, impressed and happy with his honesty, gave him the axe, and said that the axe was his, from that day onwards, for he was honest and not greedy.
The woodcutter had gotten really happy, and he thanked the Goddess and went back home. He sold the axe later on, and made a lot of money off of it.
Another woodcutter, who was working in the same forest, had seen everything from a distance, and he wanted an axe made of gold too.
He went to the lake, and then, he dropped his axe on purpose. The Goddess came out, and then, he told her, that his axe had fallen down into the lake, and asked her to fetch it. The Goddess went back into the lake and came out a few moments later, with a gold axe. The Goddess asked him if it was his axe, and the woodcutter said that it was his axe indeed.
Enraged by his greed and dishonesty, she refused to give him the axe, and told him to go away, and she went back into the lake. The woodcutter was angry at what had happened, and so, he went away. The Goddess would only reward the gold axe to an honest person, and not to a greedy one.
Moral - Honesty is the best policy.

@MistyMagic Oooh! OooooH! Ooooooo! What about the stories of King Arthur and Camelot? The Lady of the Lake? That one is very similar to the story of the axe but it is a sword that is lost. I am lucky to have visited the sites of the castle and the lake in England and I must say they are pretty magical and I might have felt a little magic of my own there too :)
