What is your favorite language?

I thought it would be really interesting to ask everyone what their favorite language is! Of course, there is no right answer and one language is not better than the other, but please put your favorite language and why! Excited to hear all your answers! 🌍

What is your favorite language?

Well, I guess it would have to be German. Seeing how my paternal grandparents spoke nothing but German, and I spent my young years with them; I spoke nothing but German the first five years of my life. Unfortunately, once I went to grade school; the first grade teacher decided that was not going to work so I got my fingers smacked every time I spoke German. I switched to English pretty quickly. I regret not keeping my native tongue alive within me today.

@xandia

Oh wow, I'm sorry that you had to experience that in school. That's not really fair, but I guess that's how things were unfortunately. Maybe you could relearn the language and it'll be easy for you to pick it up again! ❤️

Wow I also love German but it's not my mother tongue. I am learning this wonderful language

Ah, I can relate to your story.

Spanish was my native language, because my immigrant mother only spoke the language and my father was away at work for many hours, didn't see him as much until I got older. My parents have been separated for years now though since I was in my late teens/early 20s.

I think you will pick up the language fast! Since you still have it in the back of your mind, after years of speaking it with your German family members.

I forgot the language too, because I grew up in a small (racist) town, where I wasn't allowed to speak the language and people would constantly make remarks about "going back to your country" and a couple racial slurs that I won't post here...

I tried learning on my own when I was young, but my family mocked me and my mother was abusive growing up[verbal, physical, and SA...]. So I stopped studying for a while and hated the language... Then in maybe high school to college years, I took it serious. I learnt Spanish in different dialects than my family though. I sound kind of funny to them based on my word choices, haha. But if I talk to other Latin American/Hispanic, they think I am actually native to my mother's country, I am not.

Good luck on your journey to relearn German! I want to go back to school to touch up on my Spanish more. I want to be able to speak professionally for jobs.

Hi! Thank you! I hope you are doing well too! I don't know if I have a favorite language, but I would love to learn Italian because I'm genetically Italian and wish I was more in touch with my past! Maybe one day I'll learn!

Oh, this is a very difficult question, because I study a lot of languages and they are easy for me, it's difficult for me to choose one. I am from Russia myself and I love my native language, but I like English more because thanks to it I was able to move to the country I dreamed of living in and found a great job there. And I don't even have problems with visa extension, because I know a good website russia-travel visa services where you can extend and get a visa very easily and in a short period of time.

Hi @JamesWicks, this question is difficult for me too! I'm an avid fan of languages.

If you don't mind me asking...

Which languages are you currently studying? Which ones would you like to study in the future? What are your levels on those languages?

That's awesome that you were able to live in the country of your dreams! Congrats on that! 🎉🎉

Well my most favourite language is German and japanese. Because I am also loving their culture. So it's not hard for me to learn a language. Because I study a country's culture while learning the language it is more fun and exciting than forcing your self to study a language. And I also love English language because I love English literature. And I have a bachelor's degree in English literature.

@agreeableBlueberry7426 That's really awesome! I wish I had the dedication to learning languages like you do! Are you fluent in any of these languages? Also, what's your favorite piece of literature in English? I love to read!

I am fluent in English only, but I am still learning these languages. I think German is more understandable if you know English. Because German and English are both came from Latin. And many English words are there in German. My favourite book is a novel by Jane Austen 'pride and prejudice'. Other book is 'wuthering heights' a novel by Emily bronte. And Shakespeare's tragedies are also my favourite. Like hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, king Lear.

You really like the classics!! I might have to give those a try. I've heard a lot about Austen and Bronte through movies and such, but I'm not a big classics person.

Your ancestors were brave enough to leave the country and restart a new life abroad.

I tuoi antenati furono coraggiosi abbastanza da lasciare il paese e ricominciare una nuova vita all'estero.

You could study Italian with one of many free courses online. Try Babbel: it's smart and funny. Potresti studiare Italiano con uno dei corsi online. Prova Babbel: è intelligente e divertente.

By the way: if i make mistakes when i write in English, please, say it to me!

This is such a hard question. I think Spanish is so beautiful, and I really love the language and culture. But I’m also learning a few others, and I love Arabic. Something about the swirly characters and speech patterns is just so cool. But I love all languages and could not pick one!

@fruityPond7887, I believe they're dialects in India, or they might be considered their own complete language? I am not entirely sure. I know in India they also speak Tamil, Punjabi, and Hindi as well[apart from English].

I'd have to say Finnish. I found an appreciation to it after moving to Finland. I knew a little before I did, some words and stuff here and there, but it took some years to learn to actually live with it. There's something I've learned to like about it over the years.
