hand lettering (any calligraphers here?)
I've gotten back into it after a hiatus of several years. It's something I can do on almost a regular basis, as lettering doesn't require quite as much effort (for me) as illustration or other art genres & so is more suitable for us chronically ill folk.
What's changed is that I don't only use broad nibs, as I did in the early 2010's...now I use brushes. Anyone else who does lettering by hand, feel free to post it here. Best to keep the subject matter SFW for obvious reasons. I hope I'm not the only scribe in 7Cups!...

I've done calligraphy for approximately 30 years now, it was one of the hobbies I was encouraged to pursue due to manual dexterity issues as a child. I've found it increasingly challenging to find the styles of pen and ink I am used to, I've also used calligraphy markers but I much prefer the way the pressure on the nib factors into your work when using pens. Recently I was gifted a glass dip pen as well and will admit that I've been enjoying just discovering that new option as well. I suspect the glass dip pen would be well suited to hand lettering over calligraphy. One of my favourite parts of the dip pen is that it's extremely simple to switch colours of ink as I like.
So would you say you have a specific hand lettering style or does it vary from piece to piece?

I don't have a "style" at all, unless you count what I do with brushes. Am not practiced enough to have a style as such.

I will have to do some for cups, I don't keep much of what I do as it's usually part of a gift for someone else. I might cheat and get out my calligraphy markers however!

I got my pens yesterday. However, these pens are very different from those I used to. I am going to have to practice a whole lot.😂

Most of the styles I do look more like the broader font in the second half of this piece. So how many times do you write the same thing on average? (I'm a perfectionist so I end up with tons of discarded copies.)

If I can maintain focus, I will do much more of that real lettering in 2024. The messy brush lettering is just a way to practice the ducti of Roman capitals...more about making something for an audience to see than anything else.

Excellent, truly excellent. Calligraphy does not get the exposure it should, IMHO. In this age of Digitized Everything & AI making more jobs obsolete every year, the traditional arts & crafts are too often ignored.
I look forward to seeing what you bring to this thread. Am trying to practice my lettering at least three times a week...if I get to doing it every day, then maybe my work will start to look decent.

It looks decent to me😊. But if you are like me, you may be a bit of a perfectionist.😂.
@WorkingitThrough2 I prefer to think of it has holding to a higher standard. Perfection may be impossible, as who can objectively conclude when something is "perfect"?... Even so, it is demanding standards that give us something to shoot for, to do a thing well instead of just adequately. For me, settling for the merely adequate is mediocrity in action. Yecchh 😒

More of my messy brush lettering...this is the closest thing I have to a "style". Most calligraphers write inspo stuff & devotional Bible verses, but those don't fit me at all:

well calligraphy is something which really intrigues me I took classes to for a year and I agree with ur opinion about it being simpler compared to other art forms brush pens are great but I personally really love the feel the broad nib pens give 🤍
@tranquilechoes That's food. If you still do it now, or if you have any of your work from when you took that class, you should post it here. Would like to see it...I think we'd all like to see it.

That is some pretty cool lettering and a very unique style.
I do a little bit of calligraphy too but mostly just with brush pens and the occasional dip pen. Mostly just stick to a copperplate style though. I started doing it for pretty exam presentation but then really liked the hobby so stuck with it.
I might post it here too someday.
