What is something Depression keeps others from knowing about you?

Depression can be good at masking who you really are as a person. It can keep others away and selfishly keep you all to itself. What is something that Depression keeps others from knowing or seeing about you?

Many people cannot tell that I've been suffering from Depression for more than 20 years. Like many others, we put on a mask when we're dealing with people around us, whether that be our friends or coworkers and even family. I often confuse myself, not knowing if my smile or laugh is from my heart, or if it's just my many masks. There are only a few close coworkers that know of my depression, I chose to share my history with these ladies because they also have depression themselves. There is one lady whose daughter is bipolar and have breakdowns at least once a week. I try to be of some help to my friend and give her some resources that have helped me. I've recommended 7 Cups and another resource to where finding a job will be easy for the daughter. I know how hard it is to go to interviews when you have social anxiety.

I think I might be to a point where I don't recognize what my true self is like. I think the only time I act myself is when I'm all alone. Whether that be during bedtime, or when I'm home alone~

@Jaeteuk

I want resources can help for a job. I do wear masks, but I have noticed when I am tired (usually due to my sleep apnea and anemia), I can get moody easier. I also break down faster. Most people don't know what to do when I break down.

My job resource is a job seeking organization called Ranstad. If you go to www.ranstad.com, on the top right, if you click on Ranstad Worldwide, you can see if your country is included in the list. I used them for about a year, you basically just upload your resume and choose a few jobs you prefer to do, and they email you about openings that you might be interested. I liked how they use email to contact me, although they sometimes called and left a message. There's no need for interviews (many people get nervous during interviews). Before, I asked for clerical work. I worked at banks helping managers organize their files, or worked behind the counter organizing client cards. Don't really need to deal with other staff. I'm in Canada, back then it was about $12/hr, each job is like 2hrs. Then they mail you the cheque for your pay. They have like a person that follows you, like a case manager, so you'll be dealing with the same person all the time through the email. Of course, this is only a temporary job, depending on the kind of jobs you're interested in doing, they might just offer you a job once a month. They usually contact you a week before the date, so you have time to say yes or no~

@Jaeteuk it sounds interesting. I might try it as soon as my doctors have my sleep apnea figured put.

I've noticed when it's certain people of my family or friends, I will mask myself. I think it is so I don't appear weak. Then they don't think that I have my mental problems. I just do want them to take control over my life.

Well, my depression makes me hide the fact that I'm depressed and so I don't really think others truly know I'm depressed. If you were to find out, you'd have to sit down with me and listen to the way I speak and look at things in life to figure out that somethings wrong. Depression sucks because it makes me be someone I'm not just to not be judged because nobody really understands it unless they go through it themselves...

I pretend to be someone I'm not. I'm afraid that they'll see the real me and think I'm weak, or I'm just an attention-seeking whore. They'll see me as a joke. I hide my own feelings or personality and 'act out' what I should be.

Depression makes me hide everything about myself. I become a blank slate, I don't speak, I become a statue

Depression keeps other from realizing that I'm actually very outgoing and friendly and that I love to talk.. sometimes I think my friends and others that know me- assume I may be the exact opposite. Or that I'm just mysterious... But really I wanna go out and have fun with my friends..

@CassieColemanHepplerLICSW

Doesn't let people know:

- My past (out of fear it can be used to further hurt me)
- My true side (out of fear I'd look like an idiot etc.)
- Sometimes I'm simply just too tired to be myself
- Also for many years, it left me confused, feeling empty after my depression got better I wasn't sure if I was happy as I'd forgotten what it was like to remain in a good mood for more than an hour so I'd act up.
