Hi, everyone! Today is World Diabetes Day, a moment to honor everyone living with diabetes and other long-term health challenges. Managing a health condition (whether physical or emotional) can require courage, patience, and daily acts of self-care that often go unseen.

You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to ask for help. You are allowed to take your healing at your own pace.
Here are some tips for anyone with diabetes or other health challenges:

1. Practice Check-In Moments

Take a short pause during your day to notice:

  • How am I feeling physically?

  • What do I need emotionally?

  • What is one gentle thing I can offer my body right now?

 2. Be Kind to Your Body (Even on Tough Days)

It’s okay if you’re tired. It’s okay if you’re frustrated. Try speaking to yourself the way you would speak to someone you care about: “I’m doing my best. My body deserves patience and compassion.”

3. Break Tasks Into Small, Doable Steps Managing health can feel overwhelming. Simple steps help:

  • Drink a glass of water

  • Do a 2-minute stretch

  • Eat something nourishing

  • Take medications or check levels mindfully

Small steps add up. Every small act counts.

Reflection Questions

Feel free to answer any (or all) of these in the comments:

  1. What’s one thing you do to care for your body or health - even on hard days?

  1. What’s a small boundary or habit that has helped you manage stress or wellbeing?

  1. Do you personally struggle with or have a family member that faces diabetes? What are your tips for someone who relates?

Your insights may help someone else feel a little less alone today

@jesusredeemedme2425

it's just as important to take care of yourself at prediabetic. Adding more healthy carbs to your diet and reducing your sugar intake can help a lot! I remained at that level for 3 years before I developed it again. That was my bad diet that did it.

@Heather225

What’s one thing you do to care for your body or health - even on hard days?

Remember to drink water! Especially on a GLP-1 you have to drink a lot of water to aid your slowed down digestion. Even the days where I feel like I can't eat much, I still have a full water bottle by my side.

What’s a small boundary or habit that has helped you manage stress or wellbeing?

I keep a 3-tier basket on my counter. It used to be filled with unhealthy snacks and candy. Now it is filled with fruit and healthy snacks. (Quest protein chips are my favorite!) I even changed my one vice, Coke, to zero sugar. But I kept one thing I would not give up, and I think that's where the success is. I love my coffee creamer, so I thoroughly enjoy my one cup of coffee a day. :)

Do you personally struggle with or have a family member that faces diabetes? What are your tips for someone who relates?

I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2022. At that time, I went on a GLP-1. It was very hard on my body, and I ended up stopping it. I had developed a diet that let me lower my A1C down past prediabetic. This year, my blood sugar was out of control. I have to treat myself better now. I'm on a GLP-1 again, but a different kind, and it's going much better! I also have to take insulin this time around, but my blood sugars are regulated, and I feel soooo much better!

My tips for someone with type 2 diabetes:

1. Take the medicine the doctor/diabetes educator suggests. You can always stop taking it and try something else.
2. If you are given a GLP-1, talk to your doctor about how to support your digestion system.
3. If you are offered diabetes education, take it. If you are offered a dietitian, take it. Take any help you are offered, even if you don't think you need it.
4. Eat right and exercise. I know it sounds silly, but it really does matter. We have to protect our hearts and kidneys. I eat a Mediterranean diet and found a lot of healthy food I love that way, and on a budget I can afford.

@Heather225 I have had prediabetes which is called Hypoglycemia and that is even more common than diabetes. People taking lots of sugar and carbs tend to be in that place. That if untreated can develop into diabetes. A low carb moderate to high protein diet can help stabilize my situation.

@RaviEmpathy that is something that happens. If  you are not limited in your data, then use a browser Chrome Firefox DuckDuckGo on the phone and it may be better only it uses more data.

  1. What’s one thing you do to care for your body or health - even on hard days?

we  drink lots of water and well  take all the meds we have too take even on hard days we have to keep in check with them things our very being depends on it

  1. What’s a small boundary or habit that has helped you manage stress or wellbeing?

for us it taking personal time and space we had to set boundaries'  with others about this as they was not allowing us to have the personal time we needed and personal space we even gave up some relationships due to them two things even with family and friends

  1. Do you personally struggle with or have a family member that faces diabetes? What are your tips for someone who relates?

we have diabetic  have had it since in 30's  we on insulin  so the one tip we been told is even if not eating to take about haft the insulin one normally takes this we was told by diabetic doctor. for us some days just very hard to eat due to the eating disorder and also other health issues

she also told us to make protein  drinks or smoothies with the protein powder in them as that can be easier then eating on some days  for us it the insulin and 2 pills for  the diabetic  too

also to get the blood work done on time as the A1c to be done every 3 months

in our family it runs in family dad and mom both have it too one brother has it also grandma did and others in family

do not go all carb free as that not good as body needs carbs and protein  with carbs eat healthy ones not junk food
