My Disabilities

Hi everyone, hope the day is treating you well. I'd like to talk about my disabilities.

I was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 3. This affects your mobility and weakens the muscles. For me, it affected my legs. I'm able to walk but only short distances and I can't stay up on my feet for too long. I'm unable to do anything physical that requires me to use my legs. Ever since I was young, many people would make fun of me and even pretend to walk the same way I do. Nobody cared about my feelings being hurt which slowly led me to suicidal thoughts. Nowadays, I've come to terms with this but every once in a while, I'll get a suicidal thought pop into my head.

The next one is epilepsy. I was diagnosed with complex partial seizures at the age of 12 and that turned everything upside down for me. My attendance in school was poor, students thought I'm just making it up, etc. I don't understand how people can think I'm making it up... I start college next month which I'm excited about but I'm afraid my seizures will interfere with my college life... I hope nothing bad will happen to me.

Anyway, that's all I have about my disabilities. If anyone has advice for how to get through college, let me know. Thank you for reading and have a good day.

Hi!

For college, I recommend connecting with the disability center early on. Even if you don't need anything/qualify for anything right off the bat, it helps to have at least opened some information with them before anything is needed.

Is your epilepsy fairly well controlled? Do you wear some type of medic alert information?

@dapperSkies5665 I understand going into college with disabilities, I have severe speech impairment as well as extreme panic attacks (which is far different from your disabilities). The best thing to do is be yourself. Try not to associate with those who want to be pricks towards you for something you can

@dapperSkies5665 Hi ,It's nice to meet you. I was bullied also as a kid and found university to be a much different experiance, The people were more mature and accepting. I hope that it will be that way for you also..Back when I went to college there where many clubs on campus. Maybe You can check if there is a club for people with disabities on your campus. Be sure to check out Crisis Resources here at 7cups if you get thoughts of suicide. ,

@dapperSkies5665 I have epilepsy also. I have the partial seizures and have had them since I was 14. It really screwed everything up at that time b/c I was in driver's ed! Just about to get my license and I was diagnosed w/epilepsy!. But I nvr let it stop me and you shouldn't let it stop you either! I'm 34 now and have an auto shop w/my husband. I can't drive, but I can fix cars. lol Don't let the criticism from others hold you back! People today like to label and point out disabilities and that's wrong. Every car I've fixed, no matter if it's new or old, has some rust, missing screws, tranny fluid is burnt out, and wires have already been soldered together. Just like humans. Nobody is perfect. You may be missing some air in your tires, but your tranny and engine are working great! :)
