Family Disowned me, how to readjust?

User Profile: SGold8556

Hey all!

Long story short my family just disowned me for not sharing the same beliefs that they had. I was adopted at birth by a very conservative family and when I became an adult and starting forming my own views and opinions they didn't like they discarded me like trash. I was never super close to them but knowing that I'm truly alone right now is rough and I'm not sure how to handle it. My friends are doing what they can and I can't expect them to know what to do when I don't even know what to do myself. I just want some advice on what to do next?

I'm so sorry they did that.

You should be allowed to have your own opinions.

Not a reason to disown you at all 🩷

Stay strong.

And hold dear to your own truth.

Hopefully in time with space and time, you'll heal 🩷

Hello there,

I think it's amazing that you are starting to know what you like and what beliefs you have. That is something you should not be ashamed of. I'm always here and I'm sorry to hear that but just know you are not alone ! My advice would be to follow your beliefs! Can't let anyone change you. Be who you are and the right people will come to u:)! Never give up ! And remember I am here if u need to talk more no problem ! Message me anytime

Have you talked to a lawyer about it? (I’m focusing on the part they disowned you). Because at least where I live this is really hard to do, you can’t just disown a child for such a thing. It’s not even allowed legally. The only scenario I’ve seen children being disowned is when they commit a serious crime against their parents (we have a famous case here where the daughter planned the parents murd3r and they were “rich”, but she was disowned by law, considering what she did).

I strongly recommend you to seek legal advice.

For the other part, I’m sorry that happened, but I’m glad you grew up and can follow your own way out of that toxic environment. 💕

I'll give talking to a lawyer a try, they have no problems lying to the police tho and accused me of stealing the car and credit cards they gave me to use so I don't have a large amount of faith in the justice system but I'll try.

@SGold8556 First, do you have a safe place to stay and food? Have to make sure those survival needs are met. Then, without your family, what other support systems do you have? Sounds like you have some friends, but the support they can offer is limited. What about your job? Are there any people you can kind of lean on there? Focus first on survival needs, safety, food, water, place to stay, transportation, enough money to meet your day to day needs. As you stabilize in your new situation, then try to meet like-minded people to develop friendships with.

Yeah I'm safe now thank you! The past couple weeks have been rough but I have a support system that is helping this is just so overwhelming and I don't know what I need right now but it is helping. It's been hard for me to even leave my apartment but your right I do need to get back outside and try and find a community that can help me try and get out of this survival mode and start living again.

Not the same but I wish you the best. Faith has taught me, that we only have one father. And our brothers and sister are rooted in him. I don’t want to seem too similar to your family. Truly, wish you the best, believe me I’ve endured much abandonment by those closest but it does get better

@SGold8556First, remember that family isn't defined by blood. Some of the dearest members of my family do not share my DNA. Find yourself a new definition of family. Family are those who will be there for you, no matter what. They are the people who always have your back, make you feel safe, and cherish you as you are...warts and all. Trust me, I know what that feels like. My own birth family spent years refusing to accept me because I didn't fit the mold they had for me. Eventually, they even tried to say that I was mentally incompetent and forced me out of my home. That's when I found a new definition of family. Remember, you have great value inside you. You have worth.

Thank you for this! 💜 I was adopted at birth and dont know any of my blood siblings. Sorry you also have to deal with this too, my parents are also trying to claim I'm mentally incompetent and violent (which is wild I've never and would never hurt someone else and they know that). This helped a lot to read thank you :)

Won't share any advice as such, because you'd understand your situation best; but just want you to know that you're not alone. We are here for you, and your friends are too. Sending you strength, lots of hugs and praying so that you find the right direction in life going forward. I appreciate you for standing up for your own beliefs even in the face of crisis. Hope you are financially stable. If not, that might be the first area to sort. Wish you the best 👍🤗

What is something you really like to do ... something you have discarded for so long maybe bc of your family believes or just because of circumstances. For me it was an Art afternoon where I found a mixed group of people who were there really to do that. Not all young, not all old, not all hippy, not all traditionals... people who are secure enough to be open enough to others and enjoy doing something side by side. That is what united us at first then you find out other things... get to join other groups, friends can only do so much, maybe this means you need to make your circle even bigger, find others that in a way are like you, this community of 7cup is a good start for online support but you need a journey in finding a physical one.

Do you volunteer? Do you have something that is part of your identity that you would like to explore adn do? maybe through that you do find a community that is more family like.

This is a great idea thank you! I've always loved musical theater but haven't done any musicals in years. I volunteer too with some of the local communities here and will probably start doing both again soon!
