Coping with addictions..
To everyone out here that is or has went through addictions, is there anything you would say or heard in the past that helped you push through and either stay sober or break that bad habit? Currently going through day one away from mine and hoping to stay focused and reach out.
@nachos4breakfast Stay strong and take it one day at a time. Remember, you're not alone in this journey. Reach out for support whenever you need it. You've got this!
You're doing hella fine, bud. Just keep doing it with taking small steps at a time and believe me all this hardship is gonna be worth it. You're really a strong person.
@nachos4breakfast Nacho for me it was one day getting a call from My mom, with her talking to me while she was crying and pleading with me. Her Health was deteriorating and, I wasn’t going to be the cause of her collapse. I walked out from where I was, which wasn’t any really good place and I didn’t look back. I didn’t completely stop abusing things, but it was the major turning point. I replaced everything with new coping skills eventually, and have been sober for well over ten years. You have to take it moment by moment by moment and constantly remind yourself of why you are trying to change your life. Being here and getting additional support is a start. How do you think you could broaden your support system? Are you open to adding any other options to your sobriety?
You’re so strong remember that
@nachos4breakfast
Yes, I use the harm reduction method. I'll let you look that up yourself.
Congrats on taking steps and also reaching out / sharing.
As cliche’ as is, really is a ‘day at a time.’ Be kind to yourself in this process. Be good/easy moments and really tough ones. This is okay and it will pass. Hold on to the reasons you are making/taking these steps and remind yourself of your worth. What you’ve been living is far harder than that ahead, the best is yet to come.

Hey man, im glad you've made it to this point :)
For me i've been dealing with substances, and for one I had some pretty negative/sketchy experiences when seeking treatment. I got so fed up that I basically ended up saying f--- this im never coming back to these places again. So I would say that a genuine anger/fedupness for me was a surprisingly effective motivator/source of fuel to help make and keep that vow in the short term.
(and also I really just wanted to have a decent sleep for once 🤣 )
For the other , I ended up using curiosity (i guess?) like I wanted to see how Id start feeling better, kind of like observing a plant grow or something. So I'd say "how am I going to be feeling if i make a day, a week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months? What physical or mental changes are happening and then just basking a little bit in them ;P. For this one I also couldn't sit still at all so I just started exercising. (i also just got sick of paying for them XD like why buy this and use it up in a day when i could buy two bags of oatmeal for half as much and have that last two months. These sort of logical decisions became easier to make the longer I was sober)
No, obviously anger as a source of fuel is unhealthy in the long term, and for the second thought there comes a point where you kinda plateau and instead of feeling better you kinda just feel normal. But just to get that initial space from w.e the addiction is so you're in an all around better state to start developing long term replacements and habits.
Food for thought :D
@nachos4breakfast Happy day one. So, if you have the time read In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Matte. He explains addiction in great depth. I helped me understand my addiction and caused me not to villianise my addiction.
Addiction is a byproduct of our fractured selves and unresolved traumas or emotions. Try figuring out what is causing you to stay in addiction when it's affecting your life negatively. For me example, I used opiates to escape certain emotions and to try and relieve depression and anxiety. Now I'm medicated and I have just over 2 months clean. The medication alone, however, did nothing. You need to get to the source of why you are using. It's difficult. Good luck dude
@nachos4breakfast
Thanks for the overwhelming support everyone, 16 days sober now and feeling better than ever.. it took hitting the bottom to bounce back and coming back to this app and seeing the support feels awesome. Glad I stuck it out and took it one day at a time.
