How much of your mental health issues are genetic?
How much of your mental health issues (depression, anxiety, etc. ) are genetic?
In my case, I feel I was feeling a lot of sadness/ withdrawl from childhood only even when there was no trauma of abusive circumstances (that were to come later). My parents are highly anxious people too. Father been into alcohol. Mother has had depression too.
So - I won't ever know for certain - but I have a strong feeling my mental health issues were always there due to my genes - they became more obvious with life thats all.
What is your feeling about this regarding your mental health?
@Creamyyy I never thought about this before🤔🤔 I hope I don't inherit any traits or gene's my parents had😕 I think all my health issues were made over time

I do think genes and environment both play a role in our mental health and also how we perceive how others in our families deal with their mental health and processing their feelings. We copy what we see 💕💜

I agree with @pinetreetree it may be more of a nurture thing.
For example if your parents did not have healthy coping skills ( i.e. alcohol etc) how could they show or train a child to address their feelings etc. I really think this post showed me something in my own life as i have siblings with poor self confidence and addictions and often blame it on past etc... I am different as far as mental health issues, so genetics was not different. What was different in whom i chose to role model and nurturing side.
Personally i got rage and fury from my father

i think there’s genetic but I also think there’s environment.
For example- living with an unhealthy addicted parent who does not seek treatment can lead to the child having mental health issues-regardless. But, if it was already there-who’s to know?
You could have your family of no divorce, no abuse and still have a child with mental illness.
Now, should these people in the same family tree…it could just be in the gene pool.
Concept of mental health is very subjective, dynamic and complex as We are studying humans which have individual differences (everyone is unique)
So its difficult to pinpoint exact reason, sometimes it can be genes but they tend to manifest when environmental condition are stressful most of the times.
That being said, a lot depends on the individual on how he perceives things, others and their ownself.
I will also add that if one ask that
Is mental health constant? Answer to that is No.
It's dynamic, depends on your age, childhood experience, your self concept, way of thinking, personality type, your support system many things.
So please be kind to yourself and others.

I can’t really say anymore. Originally after my diagnosis for depression I accepted it till a few years later while in program an learning Certain things about mental illness I asked the psychiatrist if depression can be forced. Despite my Mom never receiving a diagnosis she showed signs of depression which she denied but she would force me on weekends to at least sleep 15-18 hours where I wasnt allowed to watch tv or nothing. What pushed me to ask that question was that after year’s bein’ in a day program da depression seemed to go away where all medication was removed and been depression free now for 15 years. There may be some down days but I get over it within 24-48 hours. I seem to be able to control how long I crash on a certain mindset. I’ll tell myself Aight I give it 24 hours to feel this feeling an while feeling it figure out how da issue is to be handle out to figure why I am needing affected then way da situation has done to ME an 9 times out of 10 I’m able to figure things out which in most cases issue was resolved in less than 24 hours. My children have suffered depression most especially my daughter who seems to have it bad like my Mom did. So honestly I really don’t know. My daughter, mom, granddaughter and I all have epilepsy so some of what my mom and daughter experience(d) may be attributed to it. Maybe not depression wise but Ya c’n tend to sleep when in midst of a seizure.

That's a really insightful way of looking at it, and it makes a lot of sense. Seeing that pattern in your family and having those feelings from such a young age really points to that possibility.
I think you're onto something important. From what I understand, genetics can play a huge part. It's like having a predisposition, and then life experiences can amplify it or bring it to the surface. It sounds like you've connected a lot of dots for yourself.
Not sure if can put an accurate percentage on it...my depressive tendencies definitely have a genetic component. Depression runs in my father's family, though it sometimes skips generations.
