I feel emotions, but I don’t care about others’ emotions, even the people closest to me
I’ve been trying to understand this about myself and thought this might be the right place to ask.
I do feel emotions. I get sad, angry, and happy. I can tell when someone else is upset or hurting, but at the same time, I just don’t really care about their emotions.
Even when it’s someone close to me like family or friends, I want them to live well and be happy, but I don’t feel connected to what they’re feeling. When someone cries, it makes me uncomfortable. I want to comfort them only so the situation ends, not because I genuinely feel their pain.
When someone tells me something sad, I understand it’s sad, but I don’t actually feel sad for them. It’s like I can recognize emotions, but they don’t fully reach me.
What’s strange is that I can cry, but usually for myself. When I feel hurt, lonely, or misunderstood, I can cry easily. But when something bad happens to someone else, even someone close, I feel almost nothing.
When my grandmother passed away, someone I was genuinely close to, I didn’t cry at all. I saw even distant relatives crying, but I felt blank. Yet I can cry over fictional characters in movies or dramas as if they’re real.
It confuses me. I can feel pain and empathy in fiction, but not in real life. I’m wondering if this is emotional detachment, a coping mechanism, or something else entirely.
Has anyone else experienced something like this? Is this a sign of low emotional empathy, or just a form of emotional self-protection? I’d really like to understand it better.

Some of us find it a lot easier than others to express our emotions.
It can be hard when we don't understand a genuine part of why we lack empathy.
I hope if someone else struggles with the same, they might share their experiences with you.
Sending you my best wishes 💜💕

I look it this way, when I am on death bed than who came, shown empathy and even cry, I appreciate that came to see me or my dead body. I love and respect them in Heaven. Thinking like this feel good, I don’t care what other feels. Remaining positive wilh any such situations is beneficial for us. Try thing like me and feel the difference and don’t forget you are still alive.
I dont think there's a single problem with what your experiencing. I actually relate. I'd actually consider myself extremely emotional on an overall scale but when it comes to caring or even feeling bad, sad, happy, or any other feeling or emotion when it comes to others rather family or friends I really don't care. Now, just because I don't care or relate on an emotional side doesn't mean I won't be there to listen or give a hug. I'm not some *** where if someone wants to talk about where they're struggling I'll make myself available but that doesn't mean I'm not aware of there feelings and what or how bad they're struggling. Its just personality I really don't care and I don't think there's anything wrong with that
@determinedHouse3151 idk how but you just explained exactly how i feel , n how i am , i was also close with my granma but when she passed i felt nothing , nothing at all , i thought there was something wrong with me matter of fact i still think theres something wrong with me ,

I do not think emotions have to be a show. we process grief and situations differently and I like you may not cry openly in situations but have my own process.
In my case i saw too many that put on a show and over the top exaggerated responses to things ...yet in a moment they can turn it off as well. who is the unfeeling one a person quietly processing or someone over doing a response which almost always resulted in making it about them.
