Higher or Lower!

User Profile: Imogene
Imogene October 9th, 2018

Hello, everyone! Happy mental health awareness month.

The game Higher or Lower is where users are meant to guess where a statistic is higher or lower than the next. For example, do you think more people like cheeseburgers or more people like crisps? If you think it's the latter, say higher (because that'd mean that more people like crisps and it's higher than the number of people who like cheeseburgers).

Hopefully that makes sense! Three new prompts will be posted each day and the answers will be posted in replies so if you're doing this after the event please don't scroll down. I found all statistics online and am more than happy to be challenged if you have countering evidence!

Have fun, and have a great rest of week!

@Imogene We don't even know the stats yet for those who are currently 13-18, but even just going with up to now 13 or 18 years would be higher than a single time point.

Sorry - upon rereading I see that this doesnt make any sense. Please ignore this prompt!

@Imogene The adults would be higher.

User Profile: MonBon
MonBon October 12th, 2018

@Imogene

Higher, I believe adults with a mental health issue outnumber children who have seen a healthcare professional for depression

User Profile: Imogene
Imogene OP October 14th, 2018

@AffyAvo @MonBon

24% of youths struggling with depression get sufficient treatment whereas 20% of adults have a mental health condition - this was a tough one!

@Imogene

20% Seems really low D: I thought the percentage of GAD alone was something like 20% by itself. I'm glad more people are receiving help than I thought though!

Prompt 4.3

Which is higher - the percentage of people in England who struggle with phobias or the percentage of people in England who struggle with generalised anxiety disorder?

AffyAvo October 12th, 2018

@Imogene Phobias, although the rate reported I would suspect is also lower, so this could depend on the method of gathering this information.

User Profile: MonBon
MonBon October 12th, 2018

@Imogene

I believe the percentage of GAD is higher than those with reported phobias

User Profile: Imogene
Imogene OP October 14th, 2018

@AffyAvo @MonBon

Really good point on the methods of data collection! The statistics I found suggested that 5.9% had Generalised Anxiety Disorder whereas 2.4% had phobias.
