Higher or Lower!
Hello, everyone! Happy mental health awareness month.
The game Higher or Lower is where users are meant to guess where a statistic is higher or lower than the next. For example, do you think more people like cheeseburgers or more people like crisps? If you think it's the latter, say higher (because that'd mean that more people like crisps and it's higher than the number of people who like cheeseburgers).
Hopefully that makes sense! Three new prompts will be posted each day and the answers will be posted in replies so if you're doing this after the event please don't scroll down. I found all statistics online and am more than happy to be challenged if you have countering evidence!

Which is higher - the ratio of adults in America that have a mental health condition compared to those who don't or the ratio of mental health workforce professionals to individuals?

Yup, you're both right! 1 in 5 have a mental health condition whereas there's 1 mental health professional to every 6 individuals.

Which is higher - the percentage of adults living with schizophrenia in the United States or the percentage of adults living with bipolar disorder in the United States?

Higher, as in, I believe there are more individuals with bipolar than with schizophrenia

Completely right! 1.1% have schizophrenia whereas 2.6% are bipolar.
Prompt 1.3
Which is higher - the percentage of full-time working women who have a common mental health problem or the percentage of full-time working men who have a common mental health problem?
(I understand there are terms used here that may be offensive - if this is the case please let me know and I will do my best to change them!)

This was a tough one! 19.8% of full-time working women have a common mental health problem whilst 10.6% of full-time working men have a common mental health problem.
Can you choose a colour that has a higher contrast for the white background? I find these are difficult to read.

@Imogene Oh my gosh, this is a tough one! I will say that the percentage of young people (aged 5-16) struggling with emotional problems is higher.

Mon, you're right, these are definitely more difficult! Actually, 4% struggle with emotional problems while 6% struggle with conduct problems.

Which has the higher rate of common mental health problems out of people aged 16-64 - people in full-time emplomyent or people in part-time employment?

You're both spot on! I would've gone for the full-time workers honestly, so well done to you both. 14.1% of full time workers have common mental health issues whereas 16.3% of part time workers do!
Prompt 2.3
Which is higher - the percentage of adults in the United States who had a co-occuring mental illness out of all of the adults who experienced a substance use disorder or the percentage of children aged 8-15 who received mental health services in the previous year?

Lower. I believe children rarely receive mental health care and the co occurence of mental illness is fairly high

Sorry - I was super mean on this one! 50.5% of adults struggling with substance use have a co-occuring mental health illness, whereas 50.6% of children received mental health services.

Prompt 3.1
Which is higher - the percentage of adults in the US who had at least one major depressive episode in the past year or the percentage of adults in the US who experienced an anxiety disorder?

Uhmm... I think more adults in the US have experienced an anxiety disorder than a major depressive episode this year

Yup! 6.9% have experienced a major depressive episode whereas 18.1% have had an anxiety disorder.
Prompt 3.2
In 2005 an English health survey was done on older people (65 or older). Which do you think is higher - the percentage of women affected by depression or the percentage of men affected by depression?

Hmm.... I think the statistic is lower, as in, I think men are less commonly diagnosed with depression than women.
To counter though, I also believe women are more likely to consult a physician in order to be diagnosed, so the prevalence is probably higher in men than currently documented.

That's a really good point! The statistics I found say that 22% of men and 28% of women above 65 are affected by depression, but you made a really valid point.
