Dinner With Our Alumni: GoldenRuleJG
Hello everyone! Happy January and I hope everyone is staying warm in this freezing cold!! This week we have a very energetic and compassionate listener for our dinner. For those joining this series, our dinners are a collection of small interviews with Group Leadership & Dynamics Development (GLDD). These help us reflect upon the program and help our current trainees as well as spread awareness about the program! If you like them, do tell us and we'll reach out!
Please welcome @GoldenRuleJG! Famously known as Golden, she has been a listener for 7 Cups since November 2019. Apart from being a listener, they are an Academy Mentor, Project Agent, Care Team guide, part of the Content Volunteer Team, Chatroom Supporter, Sharing Circle host and many many other roles! Golden has received a Bachelor's in Psychology and is widely fascinated with mental health, psychology as a subject - a big reason why she is here! If you know her, you know she's always ready to learn new skills and find ways to give back to the community!

What made you join the GLDD program?
What made me join the programme? The determination to develop more knowledge and understanding of leadership with a group environment and learn more about ethics and teamwork. This is an amazing programme and I’m grateful to have done it!
I see that one of the GLDD requirements was to host discussions. What did you like about that the most?
I liked being part of a group environment and leading discussions. I did have prior experience before but I learnt many new things ethically and a lot about diversity and de-escalation skills. I loved learning all these skills and hosting!
How was your experience doing the program?
Diverse in an amazing way!
Which is your favourite activity in the program?
Hosting and providing support. I cannot pick one as I’ve not done them all as of yet. All programmes will teach you diverse skills. A diplomatic answer for now suits 😆 But mostly the interaction bit!
What’s the one thing you learned that you will always remember?
De-escalation skills and what a chat supporter and peer supporter does.
What advice would you give to a new GLDD trainee?
Prepare for lots of group interaction and prepare to get things wrong and open to learning 😊 Chatroom rules are really helpful and ask for support from the programme leader when needed and make good use of the amazing mentors too 😊
How can mentors offer better support for the program?
Decode how many hours the individual is done and explain the calculation. My mentor did that which I’m so grateful for!
If you could change one thing about the program, what would it be?
I think the requirements are fair 😊

Hi Rule! 😊❤️ welllllllllllllll as Mafia said "amazingly known as Golden", nopie, nope, nope! lol! Not to me. To me you are Rule because Rule, totally rules! (kind of means the same thing as you rock!) You get it, you always have! You have never corrected me once with calling you that and I'm glad that you can feel it in your heart, the spirit in which it is intended! ❤️ Thank you for letting it be, letting me call you that nickname because embedded within it is always, a truly heartfelt message!
okay, back to business...(lol)
I gotta' say, I truly love your leadership style, always have and I'm confident you already know this through our many interactions together in the LSR! 😊 You are so incredibly strong in leading those discussions. As I have mentioned before, in my opinion, you are providing text book examples of how a discussion should go. You are so spot on and your timing is impeccable.
It could be good for others that are training to perhaps one day lead a discussion of their own, to work in tandem with you during a discussion or "shadow" you by being a part of a discussion, watching, learning, mirroring your behaviors and adopting your skill sets.
I enjoyed reading all of your thoughtful responses to the interview questions and it's great for all of us to get to know one another even better! I specifically enjoyed your feelings about leading discussions, de-escalation techniques and also what you mentioned about diversity.
I see unity in diversity. Learning about diversity here on this site also helps with understanding group dynamics. *high fives* 😊 Learning about diversity only makes us better together. (yes, I know, I have to say it again, teamwork makes the dream work 😊👍) Just kind of my thing, but I feel as if the best leaders surround themselves with highly intelligent as well as diverse people. For me, it casts a wide net and keeps us all away from what is called "group think". Generating lots of great ideas! ❤️
As an aside, I for one truly appreciate that you have learned about the skill sets required and the function of chat support as well as peer support. I am a peer support and what it is that I do around here could be highly dependent on what is needed of me at the moment and by whom. It's a multi-functional role. It can be really fast paced at times to recognize the needs of your teammates in the LSR, get to know their rhythms, how quickly they like to respond (or able to respond given the situation), get to know how they will respond, know when to stand back or move forward.
