Things People Who Eat Halal Foods Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

Living in NYC got me a little addicted to Halal food. 😋 I was expecting lots of hot dog carts, it was largely Halal food instead.

@jesusredeemedme2425

It's really not a big deal. I mean– its not as complicated as people seem to think. There isnt some very big ritual, or changing the tastes of foods, and those who eat halal foods for religious reasons arent seen as sinful for accidentally eating non-halal food.

What defines halal food?

@jesusredeemedme2425

Halal foods are those considered lawful according to Islam. Theres a bunch of guidelines regarding halal foods, but whats generally known would be:

- most vegetables/fruits/grains etc

- meat slaughtered in such a way to cause as less pain as possible for the animal

- no name other than God's should be invoked when said meat is slaughtered.

- pork is not halal.

- meat should not be from animals already passed away, whether that be due to accidental injury or attack from some other animal

- alcohol isnt allowed for drinking purposes. whether or not small amounts of it are allowed in food is, i think, controversial among Islamic scholars, so i cant say. we avoid it.

Why isn’t pork halal?

What’s the difference between halal and kosher?

@jesusredeemedme2425

What I was taught, pork is considered inherently unclean (Najas) . Beyond that, the wisdom of God is basically not questioned. God forbade it, so Muslims dont eat it.

Halal is food lawful according to Islam. Kosher is food lawful according to Judaism. Principles of halal food are stated in the Quran. Principles of kosher food are stated in the Torah. Beyond that, I have no knowledge regarding kosher food

I think both of them consider pork forbidden.
