Things People Who Grew Up on Farms Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

@jesusredeemedme2425

I grew up living on a mini farm which means my parents owned five acres of property.  Built on the property was our house of course, a barn, a chicken house and a couple of sheds.  My father raised steers, pigs and chickens and rabbits.  These animals provided the meat that was served with our meals.

Farmers have to be extremely hard workers and committed to caring for their animals.  Farming requires a lot of work and discipline for of all of the family members.

My parents planted a huge veggie garden so that they had fresh veggies to can or freeze.

I also spent a lot of time at my grandparent's farm where my grandfather was a dairy farmer.  The cows on my grandfather's farm had to be milked twice a day, morning and evening.  The milk collected was delivered to dairy processing plants where the milk would be processed, bottled and shipped to the local grocery stores to be sold.

Yay, I can answer this one 🤗

Growing up on a farm is hard work.

Farmers are some of the hardest working people in the world.

And humble.

And gifted.

It's beautiful as a child to see lambs and calves in the field.

To stack the haybales.

Play in the fields.

Drive the tractor.

Work in the dirt.

Use your hands.

It's rewarding.

Character building.

And yes, it's not smelly even if I've often had cow dung in my hair 😂💚

Horses sometimes stay in stables. Horses poop a LOT! Poop must be scooped :)

No seriously, that’s what it is. Using a pitchfork to scoop poop. It’s not the poop I like of course XD The company of the horses (who like peeking over to say hi!), the horsey smell, the gentle, unrushed feelings… It’s so comforting <3

What do homegrown/heirloom tomatoes (or insert your own fave fruit or vegetable here) taste like, compared to the ones they sell in the store?
