Things People Who Have Pets Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

I've always had pets since childhood, loads of rabbits ppl use to come to visit our home just to see rabbits and turtles ❤️ but having too many pets also came with lot of work to clean their mess, and keeping all of them safe...

Very often, I've lost lots of pets either they passed away due to illnesses and accidents or my parents sold/ gave them to someone who could take care. It all feels kinda blurry rn, but I remember how sad me and my siblings used to feel at those times.

I have lots of memories with rabbits, gunnie pigs, birds, fishes, ducks, etc. 💗 We used to have dozens of rabbits. It was almost like a mini zoo at our home 🥰

But at some point it got too much... and they're all now gone.

With only my cat left rn, whom we got two years ago, and he's the best 🐾💝😁

@fossilfellow Awwww, all those animals. Bet you have sooo many memories! Hope the good, happy memories outweigh the sad ones. ❤️

I love it. I love animals. They are so cute, loving, and make life better. 🥰 I absolutely love duckies!!! 🦆🦆🦆 Awwww.

We've had 14 guinea pigs at one time. 🤣😂 Never again. We've had 2 turtles. Loved them so much... but then they ran away. 😂🤣 Now we have cats. Well, me... I just claim my own personal cat. I love him. 💚

If you talk to them like they're intelligent adults, they start to understand more and more.

Yes! My cat knows tricks. No special breeder or anything, we picked her up from the Humane Society as soon as her emancipation date came.

Lots of animals are great at things, you can teach them basically whatever (:

Boooo for only training dogs (on that note, train your dogs!)

Heh, yes, very much train your dogs.

I used to have a cat that would come running when I whistled her song. Of course, she was a cat, so on a rare occasion, she'd ignore me whistling it three times and send it to voicemail.

My guinea pigs understand pretty much anything I tell them, but that doesn't mean they want to perform for commands.
