Things People Who Wear Glasses Wish You Knew
If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?
If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

Im new to it and i just wanna say for those who are also going to start or who are avoiding getting their eyes checked for fear of it:
Its not bad as you think, i promise. Some ppl feel a little dizzy the first few days but not everyone and its not a big deal. I get regular headaches and I was worried the glasses would make it worse but they had no effect on em thankfully. Try out different frames and keep in mind comfort over style, you want the ones that hurt your ears the least.
Get whatever colour frame you want. Im serious. You want neon blue you get it. Flashing purple? Go for it. I got a brown gradient i really love tho every body else thinks i shld hv gone for black/grey. I know someone with red. Looks lovely. Dont restrict yourself friends, this life is meant to be lived.
If youre not used to getting your eyesight check: its easy. I did panic a little there but youre not being judged, promise, and its kind of fun to see how the different lenses affect your eyesight. Marvel at it, at all these little things about you.
It can be a little bit scary, but they help, and you want to be able to see where youre aiming when you punch life in the face 🫡
Not everyone that wears them is a nerd or a brain surgeon. I got teased at school for wearing mine, I don't really think that bothered me, it was just the lack of visual clarity that was my issue.
I have always had really bad eyesight in both my eyes and I begged for contact lens, wow what a difference.
There is a lot of vanity and bragging, about not wearing them. Countless times, I've heard, Oh yea my eyesight is great but I've been advised to get spectacles, I'm not going to though...
It makes me laugh because you're going around squinting and damaging your eyes/vision further, whereas anything that enhances my life, is a blessing.
Whether you wear glasses or contacts you are helping your body function. It's practical. Oh and eventually when you're older, the choice will be out of your hands, you'll need frames to be able to see, it will catch up with you.
I've been wearing glasses since 3rd grade, I didn't used to like wearing masks at all, because it blurs my vision.
I can't see anything clearly without my glasses, at first it wasn't this bad, but as time passed my real vision kept getting blurred, even tho when I first got glasses I remember the doctor saying it eventually gets better *sigh* maybe because of so much screen time or genetics.
@fossilfellow I relate to the swimming thing. I felt very unsafe not being able to see, completely put me off
@ScrabbleBrain ❤️❤️❤️
Before I knew I needed glasses, I had to sit in the front of my class to see the whiteboard. I didn't have to do that until 8th grade, for some reason. In high school, I had to look at even more whiteboards, and I had to squint if I was not close enough. I took a photography class, and I took a picture that I thought looked fantastic. As I was editing it, my teacher came and looked at it and said, "Toss it out." I was shocked, then I laughed, cuz I thought he was joking! He said, "It's out of focus. Delete it."
I was 16 when I finally got glasses. The moment I put them on, I thought I was seeing everything in high definition! I could see individual leaves on trees from a distance! Everything looked so sharp and clear.
Wow! So out of focus was in focus because your eyes were that bad???
Yep! Slightly blurry edges were so normal to me that I didn't notice they were blurry!

If you think something is up, don't hesitate to get your eyes checked. When I was in middle school, I started noticing my vision getting a bit funky. Turns out my left eye didn't have good vision. My right eye was fine. My right eye now also has a prescription, but it is pretty negligible. The longer I waited, though, the worse my headaches got. Since my one eye was compensating, I was prone to lots of headaches. I'm near-sighted. I can get away with not using glasses, but I'd rather not! They've really helped me out
