Self Help Books?
Does anyone have a favorite self help book that really helped them get through something tough? Let's share those resources here!
As a college graduation gift, a friend of mine got me The Real Simple Guide to Real Life: Adulthood Made Easy by the editors of Real Simple (women's lifestyle magazine). It covers a number of topics like job hunting, budgeting, and healh care.
my favorite self help books have been:
chicken soup for the soul
everything happens for a reason
facing codependence
journal to the self
who moved my cheese
@sillyseraph002 - What is journal to the self about?
@Chiaroscuro1
it's a book full of journal excercises. kinda like writing prompts. I liked it because they helped me to turn problems around in my mind so i could see them from different angles. i gained perspective, and it was a welcome break from the usual rant/stream of thoughts method.
@sillyseraph002 - I'm still curious...
Will you mind giving us an example or 2 of the exercises in the book?
some were lists, or vizualizations, or questions or quotes. the perameterse of some of the prompts are pretty open. they're meant as guide lines that can be adapted for your own position or viewpoint. I did a lot of adapting myself.
one of the ones I liked was the imaginary conversation. the other side of it could be anything from a person to an object to a concept. I think the example in the chapter was a conversation with pain. what I did with it was have a conversation with my inner critic.
if you like journaling and like writing prompts, then you'd like it
5 languages of love....great for you and your partner
@Ar2018 - It does help to have a bit of an understanding about people having different love languages.
@Ar2018
I like this one as well
@Anomalia self-helf books are b*u*ll*s*h*i*t. rather read some good research book on your favourite topic. and practical activities such as sports would go a long way in self-help.
For those who like books along the lines of Dont Sweat the Small Stuff, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*** by Mark Manson is worth a read.
@Anomalia,I have read "how to stop worrying and start living" by Dale Carnegie.I must admit its realistic and pretty practical too.Like it emphasizes the one thing that keeps a person sane-Being occupied with work.So it really helped......Worth a read definitely....
