Things People Who Have Arthritis Wish You Knew

If this is part of your life story, please share your insights! What would you like the rest of us to learn? What should we know about people in this community? How would you like people to interact with you? Should people ask questions? What’s the best way for people to learn about this? Do you have any resources (books, movies, YT videos, etc) that will give us greater understanding and empathy and kindness toward people who experience the same things you do?

If you’re not on this journey, we welcome you to listen, learn, and ask respectful, good-faith questions! Open-ended questions are highly encouraged, as they give people the space to share their unique experiences in their own words. While this is a safe space to learn about things you’ve never experienced, please remember to be sensitive, and avoid sharing harmful stereotypes or debating someone's lived reality. If you have a question, ask it with empathy. If someone gently corrects you, please be open to learning. Let's have a gentle, fun, friendly conversation where we support one another, because it takes all sorts to make a world!

@jesusredeemedme2425 Looking forward to this thread ❤️

@jesusredeemedme2425 Oohhh, I can participate in this. Lol. I do have arthritis and a form of arthritis called gout. For me, it's extremely painful and my flares are extremely debilitating. I've struggled for years and it was the reason I didn't eat certain foods for years. (Just started back eating pork last year after 5+ years, etc.) I suffered frequently and my flares would trigger randomly. Mine is genetic and some foods trigger mine. I never knew what I could eat and with kidney problems too, I was limited on what I could take. Steroids were the only thing to help me get back walking, but I could still be down. I had no quality of life. Since last year, I've started infusions that remove uric acid from my body. I get my infusions done faithfully every 2 weeks and it lasts 2 hours. It's a big part of why I'm even able to move around the way I do and eat certain things. When I say mine was debilitating, I'm not even joking. Worst physical body pain I ever encountered. 😫 I do still have to avoid certain foods though, because my body still gets triggered and immediately reacts. It's a curse and blessing at the same time.

My flares would hit literally anywhere. It was beyond just my feet/ankles. If anyone has experienced this, they would know. Lol. It's horrible for sure.

I had no idea gout was arthritis!

@jesusredeemedme2425 Yup, it sure is. And don't believe what people say about it mainly being in the big toe. Mine was rarely ever my big toe. It hits every joint on me wherever.  🤣 That sciatica doctors said I had, yea... nope. Gout. Pelvic, butt bone, back, hips, fingers, etc. Absolutely anywhere. They never believed a young woman in her 20s then could have it. They were in denial until they weren't. It's because of my kidney doctor that I have for why I'm doing drastically better. My uric acid is still under 0.2 sincr last year because of the infusions I take. 👏 This is a pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

@YourCaringConfidant I'm sorry you have to suffer with this. My neighbor gets gout. He has to watch everything he eats. Beans and peas trigger it for him and processed foods. He used to drink a lot too.  He eats cherries and drinks cherry juice and that's helped him a lot. If you're interested -
