TW mentions suicide

I'm 16, in high school, I just lost my best friend to suicide. We hadn't talked in a while and she called me in the middle of the night, I was happy to talk to her and I picked up. We chatted for a bit a caught up with each other then she started to apologize for a bunch of stuff, i knew where it was going and begged her to please not do anything, i was crying and shaking at 2am, begging her. I didn't know her address or her parent's numbers, i wanted to help her so badly, send police or something, anything. I heard a gunshot and she stopped talking, i heard her parents banging on her door and yelling for her to open the door.

I couldn't save her, i blame myself so much, i wanted to save her, i'd killed my best friend. I feel so guilty to live without her, knowing she can't live on, she is stuck frozen in time, never growing gup or turning 18. Doing the small fun things in life. I don't even want to eat or sleep knowing she can never eat her favorite food ever again. How do I cope with this..? please help.

I'm extremely sorry about what happened to you... It is not your fault that your best friend passed away. You've done everything you can to save her. You have to carry on strong because she would have wanted to see her best friend stay strong. I'm here for you, and we are all here for you. If you need anyone to talk to, you can always access some mental health resources online, like the many national hotlines available.

I'm really sorry to hear about the pain and loss you're experiencing. It's completely natural to feel a range of emotions in a situation like this, including guilt, sadness, and confusion. Losing a friend to suicide is an incredibly challenging experience, and it's important to give yourself permission to grieve and process your feelings.

Answering your question on ways to cope, I share some suggestions:

Allow Yourself to Grieve: It's okay to feel a mix of emotions, and it's important to allow yourself to grieve in your own way and at your own pace. Grief doesn't follow a linear path, so give yourself the time and space you need to process your feelings.

Seek Support: Talking about your feelings with someone you trust can be very helpful. This could be a family member, another friend, a teacher, a counselor, or a therapist. Sharing your thoughts and emotions can help alleviate the burden you're carrying.

Avoid Self-Blame: It's common to feel guilt and blame yourself in situations like this, but it's important to remember that you did your best with the information and resources you had at the time. You cannot control someone else's actions.

Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would treat a friend who's going through a difficult time. Be patient with yourself and acknowledge that your feelings are valid.

Memorialize Your Friend: Find a way to honor and remember your friend. This could be through writing, creating art, or engaging in activities that remind you of the positive times you shared.

Seek Professional Help: If you find that your emotions are overwhelming and affecting your daily life, it might be beneficial to seek support from a mental health professional, such as a therapist or counselor. They can provide guidance and strategies for coping with your grief.

Take Care of Yourself: While it's difficult, it's important to continue taking care of your own physical and emotional needs. This includes eating well, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

Join a Support Group: Connecting with others who have experienced similar losses can provide a sense of understanding and community. There are often local and online support groups specifically for those who have lost someone to suicide.

Keep coming, sharing and connecting with others in this Community.

I hope some of these ideas answer your question, and help you cope better with such a terrible tragedy.

I wish you all the best!

Marcelo

"Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference."

I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope that quote provides you a little bit of solace...

I know the self-blame and incredible sadness you must be going through but going through that kind of experience, having it happening while being on the phone, I can't imagine the power of it. You probably feel like you've been there, it must have been very traumatic. Losing someone through suicide is the worst kind. It will take a lot of time to heal, and you probably don't want to hear it right now but it will change you forever. Give yourself time.

And remember it was not your decision, it's not your fault. You did everything you could. And she knows that, wherever she is now. She called you of all people, not because she hoped she would be saved or talked our of it. She was probably ready decided and there was nothing you could do. She called you because you were the most important for her and she wanted to say goodbye.

Honor her by fighting this, by getting help and getting better. You already work on it by being here, you're making her proud.

I'm very sorry to hear that. However, it isn't your fault that it happened. You did your best for her. It's important to move on and not get hung up on something that has already happened. Some things you can try are finding professional help, help others, and keep yourself busy.

I'm really sorry to hear about the loss of your best friend. It's devastating to experience something like this, and I can't imagine how much pain and guilt you must be feeling right now.

Please know that what happened is not your fault. You did everything you could to try and help your friend, and it's heart wrenching that you weren't able to prevent this tragedy. But ultimately, the decision to take her own life was hers, and you can't carry the weight of that responsibility on your shoulders.

Grief is a complex and individual journey, and there's no right or wrong way to cope with it. Allow yourself to grieve and process these emotions in your own time and in your own way. It might help to talk to someone you trust, whether it's a close friend, a family member, or even a therapist.

Try to take care of yourself physically and emotionally. Make sure you're eating regular meals, even if you don't have much appetite, and try to get enough rest, even if sleep feels elusive. Engaging in activities that bring you comfort or provide a temporary distraction, whether it's listening to music, going for walks, or finding solace in a favorite hobby might help a little. Just remember to be gentle with yourself and give yourself permission to feel whatever you're feeling.

Sending you love, strength, and support during this incredibly challenging time.

I am so sorry to read of this young woman's passing. Being on the other end of that call places you in a position to hablve very strong and mixed emotions to be sure.

I am sorry for your loss of this friend, and also that you experienced this in this way. I cannot imagine all of what you must be thinking and feeling. I can offer that it's totally normal for such a loss and experience to be way up there on the grief and trauma scale. I hope you are kind to yourself at this time. Give allowances while you process this. Don't doubt your own sanity if you feel overwhelming emotions. You may experience this grief in physical ways also.

Please try to take care of your self, eat sleep, hygiene, exercise, socialize, spiritual engagement....and so on.

If you need help seek it, and keep posting here, the community is here for you.

Wishing that you find comfort , healing and understanding at this time.

I'm sorry to hear about this tragedy as it is indeed something that happened so suddenly and unexpectedly that we can't stop thinking and being sad about it. Furthermore, I definitely understand your feelings of losing your friend as it can indeed be painful especially if you've already established a deep and foundational relationships with her. However, try to think in a different way. Even though she leaved you, her spirits, influences in your lives, and smile won't just disappear. In fact, as long as you are still remembering her, missing about her, and thinking about your past experiences with each other, you will realize that she is still here. Remember, death is not the end of a life, being forgotten is. Even though she is physically dead, stories about her, memories about her still exist in a lot of people's mind. So she is not leaving you, she is just changing to another form and staying around with you. I hope you can see the positivity and loved ones around you in real life to go forward in your amazing life journey!!!
