5 stages of grief
There are 5 stages of grief.
1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Negotiating
4. Depression
5. Acceptance
which stage are you currently in and how is that stage showing up in your life?
For me, I am in the acceptance stage of losing my daughter in 2004. (it took a lot of work to get here). This shows up mainly during the holidays when I look for ways to honor her memory. My health has recently declined and I am in the denial stage. This is showing up by me not asking for resources for people with my limitation because I don’t think it’s bad enough yet.
You can grieve multiple people or things in life and you can be in multiple stages at one time.
Hi! I am grateful to have you here and sharing with us/me. While it is difficult, it seems to help me to read of, hear about, talk with others who are in some stage of grief over something (or someone) lost. It helps me to feel *not as alone* in all the gobs of emotions I am dealing with.
@Kristynsmama I appreciate how you said, "You can grieve multiple people or things in life and you can be in multiple stages at one time." I have not really thought of that before, but I feel like it is a clear description of where I am: how I may be in denial for certain grief topics and other losses feel they'd fit in another 'grief stage' better.
[It's a bit like: Platy requests permission to feel feelings? @Kristyn and 7cups respond, Granted. With a sort of half smile, Platy says, Okay... ]
Question: Which stage are you currently in and how is that stage showing up in your life?
Platy's answer: (short version ;) Last week I learned of the death of one of my neighbors. This grief is still very new. I am at least partly in 'denial' stage with that - there are still times that it doesn't feel real.
In the saga that is the story of my teeth, mouth, surgery, and healing... for parts of it I am in Acceptance because I did schedule and go to the surgery - thereby accepting that there is/was a problem and it needed attention. Other parts of this process are definitely still in Anger or Depression stages. Depending on how much sleep I get and how much food/nutrition I have each day - that kind of delegates if I have sadness and Depression over the entire thing or Anger sadness grief etc lots of emotions over where I am now and what to do with my life moving forward.
In both, losing my neighbor/friend in death and also oral surgery and healing from that, I feel thrown into some kind of rabbit hole or pit of earth. Quite dark. and very alone. (That is sad and depressing to write or read. Apologies. Searching my brain to insert some quirky fact or punny joke... not coming up with anything.) Anyone send this Platy some hugs? I could use some heated gloves right about now too; brrrr, cold fingers! <3 Platy
@Kristynsmama
I feel like I'm outside of the grief stages.
I'm not in denial about what happened at all. I think and talk about it very freely. And I've been in therapy for my trauma and loss for 10 months already.
I just don't feel very emotional about it. So there's no real anger or bargaining or even depression. What happened happened and I just sort of accepted it.
Or it's very strong emotional denial I have no control over. Because I'd rather grief healthily, it just doesn't happen.
@Kristynsmama 12 years since my son went to live in heaven. I think I've just reached stage 2 anger. And it doesn't feel good😭😭
@Tinywhisper11 Hey you ❤️ I'm so sorry for your the loss of your son. Anger can feel a little scary but it's ok to be angry. Just be angry at the people who took him from you and try not to be angry with yourself. You were just a baby yourself when you had him. He's with you every day. You carry him with you in that big heart of yours. He's in the love you give to your friends here. I know that probably doesn't help the hurt and anger you feel - I wish I could ease that pain for you
*offers safe gentle hugs* Much love to you Tiny ❤️
@mytwistedsoul thanks soul 🙂❤ I think yesterday I just needed to cry it all out. I do blame myself but yesterday I blamed them too. And for the first time I think I was angry. It's not a nice feeling to have. But after lots of crying I feel better now ❤ gives you a giant festive tiny hug back ❤❤ I love you ❤
@Tinywhisper11 I'm glad you're feeling better ❤️
Denial - because it doesn't seem real
Anger - he came back into my life only to die a couple of years later. Nothing was resolved and I feel just as lost - well more lost than before. His relationship with his other family was better than it ever was with me - which sounds petty I guess. There's just so many mixed emotions
Depression - seasonal depression kicks. The holidays are always hard for me. (childhood trauma crap) November 19th I had to put my dog down. Thanksgiving day my father ended up in the hospital - his cancer took his speech and mobility that morning. December 1st he died. Yesterday was his birthday. I'm really struggling right now
@Kristynsmama I still in denial been 2 months seen my dad pass away I can't get over my dad died and seen him died has change me forever and still can't believe he gone 4ever like yesterday my dad was live and now he is not and don't how move on from denial and not anger yet at my dad that next step I know if ever get to next step with grief because wish he was still here and hate of time going to grave because made me realize that he gone
@countrygirl9988
it is completely normal for be in denial at this soon after a significant loss. Be kind to yourself and know that you will move through the stages of grief as you are ready. Also it is common to be in denial one day, angry the next, and then move back to denial. The important thing is to know that all of your feelings are okay and normal.
@Kristynsmama thanks so denial my dad died two months ago hard for me accept he is gone and i don't went be next step in grief hard know he gone and still think coming back but know never coming back again ptsd from my dad death something live rest of my life know he is gone
