How to take care of someone grieving?
Hi everyone! I hope you are well. Grief is heavy, it weighs on, life becomes about survival. Depending on the extent of the grief basic functions can be hard to perform.
When we are faced with supporting someone through grief. It can be hard to pin point what is helpful for the person you are supporting.
What can one do to support someone who is grieving?
@Hope I can support someone grieving by just allowing them to vent and be themselves. I can give them a safe place with me in the chat where they can spill out what's weighing on their heart. I can assure them that their feelings are valid and they have the right to feel the way they do. I would not be quick to brush them off and expect them to heal overnight. Grief is something we may all have experienced; but we all grieve differently. I would remind the person that there is no wrong or right way to grieve and that I hope they find peace by holding onto the sweet memories of their loved one.
I have a colleague who recently lost her father suddenly a few weeks ago. She had called in sick today, my other colleague tells me that she doesn't feel mentally stable enough to work yet. I'm not sure how or what I could say to her as comfort. When I saw her at work yesterday, she looked a bit pale and not in the mood. So, I had only greeted her and let her be. She might call in sick for tomorrow too, but I'm not sure what to say to her if I were to send her a text message.
I thought that aside from the sudden loss, she'd be also relieved. But I guess because she was at his bedside during his last moments, that hurt most. I wish there was more that I could do. Things that I could say.
I think that for me just an acknowledgement if my loss would be nice.
Something Like, "You two were close, I know this must hurt"
Or "I know you miss your friend"
Or a quick card or note asking if I was handling things okay.
I try to ask of there is anything I can handle for them when it's someone else. Can I mow your grass or run errands for you. Mayne call later and let them know I would love to go to lunch or I might ask them over for a glass of wine ir offer to bring one by to share with them. Depends on the person.
