Exercise
What piece of advice would you give to someone who struggles with doing physical activity?
@Beechie
Great question~
As a Fitness instructor, I’ve always suggested to newcomers to “Start Small”~
Taking “Small steps” by trying not to do too much all at once, can help with not becoming too overwhelmed. Which can cause some to quit before even getting started!
Starting Small can mean taking a walk, walk to “one” song, then try two.. Or, walk for 5 minutes then try 10!.. Or walk in place during commercial breaks then try walking around your home, etc.. etc.. eventually going further…
For those who struggle with pain etc, you can grab a chair, find a simple Chair workout on YouTube and try that for 10 minutes. Eventually increasing the time.
Every “Smaller” step we make & take adds up to even bigger strides over time! And of course Do Something You ENJOY doing! And it will never seem like a Struggle~
@PoliteOcean
I agree! Start small.
I'm still struggling myself with even starting small. I like to do yoga, but haven't been doing anything for at least 6 months now. For me, the biggest obstacle right now is to accept that it's ok to start from 0 again after not doing anything for so long. But, what lots of people have told me, just start, even for 5 minutes a day. You can always find 5 minutes. It's better to do 5 or 10 minutes daily than 1 hour once a week or every two weeks.
@Celestine22
Exactly! Start small..
5 minutes is better than 0 minutes… and once you get into it it won’t take long to start feeling good! When we feel good it enables us to stay motivated to keep going (even if only a few minutes a day). It all adds up!
@PoliteOcean I agree completely. It doesn't have to be a power workout that knocks you on your butt and makes you sore for days. Start little and build up to it. But also, it HAS to be something that you can enjoy. Because if you dread your workouts, then you will likely not stick with it. I personally get bored quickly so I like to alternate what I do between aerobics, weights, yoga, and walking. :)
@LucyDW
Yes! Exactly!!
It’s always great to add a variety of things you enjoy doing. I always say to my participants “As long as you’re moving” you’re doing great no matter what you’re doing or How much you’re doing. We can always build upon things as we go. 🙂
Choose a physical activity that doesn't feel stressful...because if you push yourself to do something you're not in for and it's causing you stress...it'll be counter productive to the purpose of physical activity. Do whatever you ENJOY doing .
Go on the swings! Fun and makes you move <3
See if you can get a personal trainer.
Do it one step at a time , its the journey not the destination, be scared if you're struggling emotionally like me , its much worse
@Beechie
oh boy. i am the worse to give advice, because I struggle with that too. but power walks definitely help. or dancing. if it feels like a chore (and in my case it does) i suggest finding something enjoyable.
@Beechiego to the gym
Little and often, breaking it up into smaller achievable bitesize sessions works well for keeping up momentum
Swimming and skating are very fun
Dance and biking are fun
Just do it. Even if it’s one push-up or one squat. That’s a start.
