I can't lose weight, please help

A few years ago I was suffering through terrible anxiety induced acid reflux that constantly made me sick to my stomach, I couldn't eat anything without feeling nauseous so I'd only ever take a couple bites at dinner.

After starting some medications to help with my anxiety my acid reflux stopped and I started eating an average portion of food. To this day I have gained 70lbs and am now overweight.

I am not happy at this body size as it causes me physical and mental discomfort, if I lose those 70lbs I'd be the ideal body weight for my age/height. I've tried calorie deficits, walking, and working out and nothing seems to do any work, I'm eating about 1000 calories a day and walk about a mile. At this point I want to start starving myself to lose weight but I don't want to cause health issues.

I'm just looking for advice from anyone who has gone through something similar. Please.

Hi there~ I’m Ocean the Healthy Living Community Mentor Leader. Thank you for reaching out here in our community..~

We are sorry to hear that you’ve been having such a difficult time with weight loss. It’s definitely not an easy journey for many. And of course no two people are the exact same when it comes down to it.

Many years ago, I too had some similar Gastro issues (without going into a a lot of detail), that I had to get around as well.. I’m not sure how long that has been going on for you until you were finally able to get medicated? As you haven’t stated… Also you didn’t state whether those issues had caused any weight loss at that time since you said you weren’t eating very much? …, If there was any weight loss (or in particular Fast weight loss) during that time since you couldn’t eat, (& then all of a sudden you started eating again after the meds), that “possibly” could have contributed to weight gain since you were then taking in food/calories again after a big restriction?

Something else to look at with your Healthcare provider is the Type of medication that you are taking for your Anxiety?! As This too could also be a factor in your 70lb weight gain since that time you’ve been put on it? (I know trading one issue for another doesn’t quite seem fair). But it’s something you may want to look into since you also haven’t mentioned following up & talking with your Healthcare provider about your situation of weight gain in that time?

It’s definitely a challenging situation physically & mentally to carry extra weight & feel discomfort in a body that doesn’t want it. But if you’ve tried every other avenue with No positive results, It might be best to make an appointment with your physician to discuss those anxiety meds. Perhaps you could talk with them about switching to something that doesn’t interfere with weightloss if that is in fact a culprit.

Also, another factor could be completely metabolic, as you haven’t mentioned if any of your Bloodwork/Labwork was completed recently? There could many simple factors there as well such as (thyroid conditions or others, etc..etc..). As things like that can also affect weight when left untreated. And your efforts to lose will be exhausted….

Also, last but not least, you stated that you were only taking in 1,000 calories. If your calories are that low, that is a pretty low restriction for the body. And it could be causing the opposite affect of what you desire?.. (unless this deficit is due to a medical suggestion from a healthcare professional)?… Most professionals wouldn’t recommend a calorie restriction Under 1,200 calories in the average healthy person.

I’m also a Nurse & Fitness Trainer.. The things I’ve mentioned I would suggest to anyone starting out. As it’s good to know where you stand on Basic Labwork when having issues losing weight after doing all the other things that aren’t working for you.

But a follow-up with your provider sounds important to discuss those things. As well as discussing the Anxiety Med that you are taking to help in Ruling out any reasons that could be causing your “Weightloss Stall”. So perhaps start there first.

And on a Final note, Once you are cleared on Labwork, & Medication, perhaps even reaching out to a Registered Dietitian could help you in creating a personal Nutritional plan for yourself. If you are in the USA, typically most insurances will allow for a first Free consultation with one. Who will weigh you, then discuss & design a plan. (At the very least it would steer you in a better direction with a 1200 calorie or other, plan) accordingly. Based on Healthy foods.

I hope this information was helpful & useful to you in some way. And that you can move forward with knowledge that helps get you on the right path to losing again! We wish you all the best on your journey. And Hope that you will continue to keep us updated on your future progress!

Best wishes to you!~

The best I've found to lose weight is by doing two things.

1) Keto diet.

2) What I call "Slow. Savor. Stop." A way to eat when we eat. We eat slowly. Savoring the food in our mouth. Like every bite is the first bite of food. Being aware of our belly. When the belly feels full, we stop eating, regardless of whether we want to taste more food or not. But since we are eating so slowly and savoring each bite, we don't care that we're full because eating slowly and savoring stretched out the eating experience.

I've done this numerous times and lose tons of weight.

Good luck.
