Setting Boundaries with Technology Breaking Free from Screen Overload
Hi everyone,
Lately, I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by how much time I spend on my phone that distract me from being productive. It’s tough because I want to do more, but often I get stuck scrolling or watching, and before I know it, hours have passed.
I know I’m not alone in this. So many people are caught in the same cycle, and honestly, it’s scary how much control screens seem to have over us.
To tackle this, I’ve set a time limit on my phone for the apps that take up too much of my day—I’m restricting them until 5 PM each day. I’m trying not to be too hard on myself at the beginning because I want to build a habit that lasts, not something I’ll give up quickly.
I’d love to hear what works for you! Do you have any tips or strategies to share about managing screen time or boosting productivity? How do you stay motivated when distractions are everywhere?
Let’s support each other on this journey toward healthier digital habits and more fulfilling days.
Thanks for reading!
@Mya000
This is an important topic for me. Since finding 7 Cups I've really been enjoying talking to people, but there's such a thing as too much of a good thing.
I am glad my screen habits have at least shifted. I used to kind of crave meaninglessness so I would doom scroll like it was my job. But I need to get back to reality.
So I don't have any good tips yet unfortunately. I think the first step is recognising something needs to change. That's where I'm at.
Maybe reconnect with nature? Walk, take pictures of birds, all the good stuff. Don't forget people too!
@cyanessence Thank you for sharing, I really relate to what you said about craving meaninglessness and getting stuck in doom scrolling. It’s so easy to fall into that when things feel overwhelming.
I love your idea of reconnecting with nature, it can be so grounding. I’m really glad you’ve found some comfort on 7 Cups too! 💚
@Mya000 I'd like to limit my screen time too but I'm using it as a distraction, to keep me from having to think about things which happens when I'm getting things done. I used to set alarms, too, they didn't bother me. Then I accidentally set the alarms in my bedroom for noon and midnight and the slight less irksome goes off at sometime in the morning which at other clock goes off in the morning.
Having to break away to turn off the alarm means walking from my study through the entire apartment to get there. Thus far I didn't notice anything, now I'm seeing things I want/need to do. Next step: set a day do accomplish thing. Not getting them done yet but at least I've gotten away from my computer and am noticing them. So I guess my suggestion is to use your alarm clock, or that and something cheap. What works for me is an alarm that starts out soft, gradually getting louder.
And somehow being in the bedroom, if I pay attention to it, reboots my day.
@affectionateBeach2752 Thank you for sharing your experience and what’s been working for you! Using an alarm to gently remind yourself to take breaks sounds like a really practical and thoughtful way to create space away from the screen. I love how you turned those accidental alarms into a positive tool to help you notice what needs attention and reboot your day. Sometimes awareness is the hardest part!

You deserve to be treated with respect and care. If you ever feel like sharing more about how it's been for you lately, I’m here to listen. 💜

@Mya000
Very important topic to bring awareness to! Having certain rooms in the house where screens are not allowed can help (bedroom/bathroom/kitchen...etc..) Putting the phone on the charger and not keeping it right next me also helps. I'll definitely have to check out that app on setting personal time limits-good idea!
Hi, Mya!
Thank you for another very relevant and well-written post!
I have "productivity days" when I give priority to getting many things done.
I write a to-do list for the day in a Google Doc, I put motivating, non-distracting music (today was Beethoven's piano sonatas), and I use a Pomodoro timer app (Brain Focus).
These are required to start, and for the first hours. Once I gain momentum, I might not need the music or the Pomodoro to continue doing things.
The music makes it pleasant and works like a "container" for my focus. I might go from work to music and back, but not enter rabbit holes beyond that.
Pomodoro is great to break the inertia (because it asks just a small effort at a time) and to continue focused on the task at hand (because it gives you regular, pre-defined breaks and sounds an alarm when each ends.) You can program the Pomodoro sequence to what works for you, for example, 5 sets of 20 minutes working and 5 minutes breaks, then a 20 min break. Or 3 sets of 40 minutes working and 10 minutes breaks, etc.
It works very well for me. I hope some of this might be useful to someone else.
@Mya000
@HealingTalk Hi, thank you for your comment! I'm really glad you enjoyed the post!
I love how intentional your productivity days sound. Using a combination of tools like a to-do list, music, and the Pomodoro method creates such a supportive structure.
I’m sure your tips will be useful to many (myself included)! Thanks again for taking the time to share. 💛
@Mya000 For me it's about moderation and making time in the day to switch off and be truly present to friends and family and have a genuine conversation, it's important we feel heard and not interrupted 💜🥰
@Amanda84 Making space to truly be present with loved ones is so precious. It really helps us recharge and connect on a deeper level!
@Mya000 💜🥰
Realize this one thing...
The $10,000 object that you are holding, is only being held by you because your time is being tracked. What you don't do, and what you do, are being measured and surveyed and the data is being used in everything from government to science, from business to military.
Every moment that you are doing something for yourself, you are building your community and your people that depend on you.
Who do you want to empower, the polotically and financially motivated government that doesn't care about human beings beyond their voting and productive capabilities, or your actual community that truly controls what you get to eat, and how much money you can make?
@Mya000
HII LOVE a few months ago I have been struggling with the same thing, till I couldn't even get out of bed to do anything productive. I firsted started small because at the start I only was very addicted and it was not because I was scrolling mindlessly but because I had a very negative feed that even made me see things life negatively. I was constantly consuming bad news from the point that I though that this world is doomed, I don't know how it happened but a random week I just lost my phone and I haven't been on my phone for like a months which felt like heaven. God was backing me up on this situation but then after a month I found my phone back and I wasn't even excited to see my phone, then I just deleted all of my social media and I never wanna go back ever again, it's never impossible but the first few weeks it will be hard, you will start to develop FOMO but at the end I was fine by missing out on things it was okay for me so I just continued my life and I started having more and more hobby's over the months. I know in the first few weeks you may dowload your socials again, it's okay just delete it again and again let it be war with yourself, eventually you will get annoyed by constantly redowloading your socials. I hope this helps you and as always have a blessed day.
@Mya000 I hear you.! Those hours slipping away to endless scrolling? It’s wild how easily that happens, right? But the fact you’re setting limits and being kind to yourself shows you’re already moving in the right direction.
For me, I try swapping the screen for something simple like maybe stepping outside for fresh air, doing a few stretches or writing one sentence in a journal. It breaks the cycle and reminds my brain there’s more waiting beyond the scroll.
Too much screen time When it comes to your brainis basically the same as taking heroin
@PeacefulWarrior1967 I hear what you're saying, it's true that too much screen time can affect the brain, especially things like attention, sleep, and mood, but it's not the same as taking heroin. While both can activate the brain’s reward system, especially the release of dopamine, the intensity and impact are very different, it doesn't cause the same kind of chemical dependence or neurological damage.
