What's your favorite hobby?
Hobbies help reduce depression by counteracting the withdrawal and inactivity that often deepen low mood — a mechanism called behavioral activation. Engaging in an activity, whether creative, physical, or social, builds a sense of accomplishment and mastery, which restores self-efficacy that depression tends to erode. Absorbing hobbies can also quiet rumination by occupying attention, while group activities add social connection, a strong protective factor against depression. That said, hobbies work best alongside other support like sleep, social connection, and professional care when symptoms are significant.
