Using Hobbies Before Bed

💤 💤 💤 💤

We all know how important it is for us to get a good night's sleep. But I only recently understood that having a relaxing hobby and making time before bed to spend on that hobby can actually help our sleep!

Hobbies like:

Reading - choose a calming book and read a chapter. Not a screen but a paper book.

Writing - write a page in your journal, diary, or book. Paper not screen.

Painting - calmly paint smooth strokes. One colour, no choices, again real paint and paper.

Drawing - choose a  pencil and paper and doodle, let all your focus be on the pencil and where it is going, clear your mind and your thoughts.

Choose something analogue. Non-digital, calming, soothing, slow and gentle and sleep will come faster.

Allow yourself a set time, 15 minutes reading, one page of writing etc. Routine is what counts, let your hobby set you on the road to peaceful sleep.

For going digital- audiobooks and podcasts. There's a sleep timer option often too.

@AffyAvo yes they are great. But I find they make me less sleepy as the narrator often uses inflections and different voices that keep me interested. Dies that happen to you?

@CocoaCassie

I try to read at least one chapter of my current read before bed time. I've trouble sleeping on time and end up doom scrolling very often. But reading helps me wind down and feel productive even before I fall asleep.

@trueconfidant123Ha so screens are no longer allowed before bed, now how do you feel?

Or just a reading app. No scrolling allowed.

@CocoaCassie

I only read paperbacks.

I still struggle to avoid screen before bed. I'm working on it.

@trueconfidant123 Brilliant, that is great, there is nothing quite like turning the pages of a book. Can be read in full sunlight, no need for a battery, simples.

What hobby have you tried to soothe you to 💤 sleep 💤

Some of the hobbies that I use to help soothe myself before bed is watching tv and reading a chapter or workbook before bed.

Can you think of other calming non digital hobbies? Let me know below!

Here is a list of non-digital hobbies that anyone can try:

1. Take a warm bath or shower

2. Listen to calming music

3. Do light stretching or yoga

4. practice deep breathing exercises

5. Mediate

6. Write in a journal

7. Dim the lights and light a candle

8. give yourself a hand or foot massage

9. Spend time with a pet

10. Skin care routine

@Lovingswan22 I love no. 5 😇

I often make that typo too, but a full body relaxing mind scan can work better than meditation sometimes, much more likely to produce restful and refreshing sleep.

@CocoaCassie I like doing crosswords, to me, they’re easier to focus on than reading or drawing when I’m tired. It feels like this hobby doesn’t come up often when people talk about screen-free hobbies, but it’s cheap, convenient, and a great way to distract the mind.

@Mya000 Great point, do you do the cryptic or the straight forward ones?

I have been journaling. I didn’t realize this was a hobby. That makes me feel good. 😊

Then I usually watch a good feeling movie (ooopsie on the screen time)

I play some relaxing music-whether it be guided meditation or soothing sounds as I fall asleep.

@peachThinker662 Yes it is as it's a good way to spend time,
