Empathy & Compassion

Empathy and compassion are really important to me because I genuinely care about understanding people and how they feel. Being a crisis counselor and a listener on 7 Cups has shown me how much it matters to just listen without judging. I’ve learned that compassion isn’t just about feeling for someone—it’s about taking action to make them feel heard and supported.

Learning empathy has taken practice. I had to slow down, really listen, and imagine what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes. I also had to pay attention to my own feelings so they don’t get in the way of helping others. Over time, I’ve noticed that being empathetic doesn’t just help the people I support—it also makes my relationships stronger and helps me grow as a person.

Empathy and compassion are now a big part of who I am as a student, friend, and future psychologist. I try to approach every interaction with care, even small ones, because I know it can make a difference.

Discussion Prompt:
What are some ways you practice empathy and compassion in your daily life, and how has it affected the people around you?

@LaNiya

I practice empathy, instead of reacting, I try to understand where someone is coming from first. I try to walk in their shoes and see if I would have done the same in similar circumstances.

And self reflection is key 💕💜

@LaNiya I practice empathy by observing, listening, and relating to others. When you're hurt, it's difficult to be empathetic or understand the other perspective of the scene, but it's important to do so. Even though empathy and compassion are a big part of me, for I can relate to anyone swiftly and try to help them express their emotions, especially after being a listener on 7 Cups, I often try to keep a personal boundary, so that I don't hurt myself.

@LaNiya

I practice empathy and compassion by actively listening to others without judgment, offering encouragement when someone is struggling, and being patient when people express their emotions. I also try to put myself in their shoes to understand their perspective before responding. These small acts have helped create a sense of trust and comfort with the people around me friends, classmates, and coworkers feel more supported and open to sharing, which strengthens our connections and fosters a more positive, understanding environment.

@LaNiya I really resonate with your point about slowing down to really listen. It’s so easy to get caught up in our own thoughts or assumptions, but taking that pause to imagine someone else’s perspective can completely change the way we respond. I’ve noticed that even small gestures... like asking a friend how they’re truly doing, or checking in on someone going through a tough time... can make a huge difference in their sense of being seen and supported.

To answer your question:
Personally, I try to practice empathy by reflecting back what I hear in conversations, even with casual interactions. I always want to find ways when it comes to validating someone’s experience and showing that I’m really listening. I’ve found it not only strengthens relationships but also helps me understand my own emotions better, since I’m constantly observing and processing.

It’s encouraging to see that empathy and compassion are skills we can grow with intention. How do you manage situations where someone’s feelings are very different from yours or even challenging to relate to?
