Appreciation is....

When was the last time you took the time to let someone know that you appreciate them? Were you aware that appreciation can be considered as a skill? According to the IDG Framework, the third dimension Relating-- Caring for Others and the World, appreciation is one of the skills/qualities listed; along with connectedness, humility, and empathy & compassion.

So what is appreciation, you ask? According to the reading, appreciation is...

It is taking time to think of others and letting them know. It is uplifting and encouraging. It is giving words of kindness and love to let someone know about the difference/impact they have brought into your life. Showing appreciation helps breed life into the appreciated. It makes them feel valued and special, because that is what they are!

You may think "Ohhh, that's so easy. Appreciating is not really a skill. It can't be." But the truth is, it is, and it really isn't all that easy as it seems. Some people struggle to voice how they really feel for various reasons. My stepmom always taught me to "give people their flowers while they are living". Show people you love them, care about them, and appreciate them... while they are still living here on this Earth.

Life is too short, so I have a little activity for us all. If you can, please consider joining me in an appreciation activity here on 7 Cups. If you are grateful for someone, let them know you are by filling out the Peer Appreciation Form. A lovely smile spreader will deliver your note of appreciation beautifully to the person you are appreciating. And if you are a mentor, moderator, or Baron of Big Hearts and know someone who is always displaying acts of kindness wherever they go, please nominate them using the Kindness Crusaders Nomination Form

It is my hope that you all join me in this activity to implement this very important skill. The skill of appreciation is one that I find to be of much value. It may not always be easy to do but, I believe, it is a necessity for us all! @Fristo

Questions:

1. In what ways can you show someone you appreciate them?

2. Why does appreciation matter in your life?

I show appreciation simply by telling people, just like I am telling you now: thanks for the post ! It means a lot and it brings joy to both sides. 🩵

Appreciation is more than just saying “thank you.” It’s about seeing someone — really seeing their effort, their kindness, their presence — and letting them know they matter. It breathes life into tired hearts and reminds people they’re not invisible. In a world that moves fast and often overlooks the small things, appreciation slows us down and invites us to honor the goodness around us.

And yes, appreciation is a skill. It takes awareness, humility, and courage to express genuine gratitude. For some, it’s not easy to find the words — but the effort itself is a gift.

As the quote says, “Give people their flowers while they are living.” Life is unpredictable. Let’s not wait for perfect moments. If someone has made a difference in your life, big or small, take the time to tell them. You never know how much it might mean.

@YourCaringConfidant you can show someone you appreciate them by just doing something thoughtful like buying them flowers or lunch. Showing people that you appreciate them is so important because you show the people that show up for you that you are grateful for them.

@YourCaringConfidant.  I think appreciation can be shown in so many meaningful ways—through a heartfelt message, a simple “thank you,” or even taking time to listen and acknowledge someone’s efforts. Small gestures, like remembering details about someone or celebrating their achievements, can also make a big difference.

Appreciation matters to me because it reminds both me and the other person that our actions and presence are seen and valued. It builds connection, uplifts spirits, and makes relationships feel more genuine and rewarding. It’s a small act that creates a ripple of positivity in both our lives.

1. I can show someone I appreciate them by expressing gratitude through kind words, writing a thoughtful note, offering help when they need support, or simply taking time to listen and be present. Small gestures like checking in, giving compliments, or acknowledging their efforts can also make a big difference.

2. Appreciation matters in my life because it strengthens my relationships, reminds me to stay humble and grateful, and helps me focus on the positive aspects of people and experiences. It creates a sense of connection and mutual respect that not only uplifts others but also brings me joy and fulfillment.

@YourCaringConfidant This is such a heartwarming and thoughtful post1! thank you for sharing it!

Reading it reminded me how easy it can be to feel appreciation but forget to express it. Sometimes I assume people already know how much they mean to us, but taking the time to actually say it or show it can make such a difference... not only for them but for us too.

So to answer your questions:
#1: I think appreciation can be shown in both small and meaningful ways... like sending a kind message, offering genuine compliments, writing a thank you note, or even just listening with full attention when someone needs to talk! For me, I also try to show appreciation through consistency... like checking in, supporting their efforts, and celebrating their wins, big or small.

#2: Appreciation helps me stay grounded and connected. It reminds me that relationships are built on recognition and care, not just presence. Expressing gratitude brings warmth into my life... it softens stress, builds connection, and helps me focus on the good around me. Life really is too short not to let people know how much they mean.
