Perspective Taking

Perspective taking means trying to understand a situation through someone else’s eyes. It is not always easy, but it can completely shift how we see people and respond to them. On a platform like 7 Cups, where members and listeners come from all over the world and carry different life experiences, this skill is essential.

We all have default reactions. Maybe we assume someone is being rude or cold, or we jump to conclusions based on how we would act in their place. But stopping to ask, “What might they be feeling?” or “What have they been through that I cannot see?” can change everything.

It also helps us notice what we might have overlooked. Maybe there is something we missed or did not fully understand. Maybe we missed something. Maybe there is more going on than we realized. Perspective taking makes us more compassionate, less reactive, and better at working with others, even when we disagree. It is not about giving up your view. It is about widening your lens and giving others the space to be human.

Reflection questions:

  1. When have I taken someone’s perspective and had it change the way I reacted?

  2. What stops me from doing this more often, and what could I practice to improve?

@jollyshortcake22

We can unconsciously judge others when we haven't walked in their shoes.

So seeing things from their perspective allows us to learn, to grow and to see life is not black and white but is also filled with grey areas and not everyone thinks or reacts the same 🥰

Thanks for sharing 💕💜

Before addressing a situation, I like to put myself in the other’s shoes

@jollyshortcake22 Hello! Hope you're doing fine!

You're absolutely correct about everything you wrote on PERSPECTIVE. It does broaden our view in a huge way.

@jollyshortcake22 To gain my perspective on something strange for me is not easy. I have to put all my opinions aside during the time I listen to others, i need to depend on their feeling almost. The thing that stops me from gaining perspective is that some details of psychology in sickness. I think I have to learn some to open my knowledge
