✉️Letter to my Symptom Series Week 3: Sadness
Welcome back to the letter to my symptom series. This week we'll write a letter to something we all have felt: sadness.
Sadness makes us feel low, moody and often prevents us from doing things we love. But sadness is also a very basic and mandatory feeling. Sadness makes us express our feelings naturally by crying which is in human nature and also a very helpful thing to do.
So this week we will tell our sadness a thank you for letting us feel and cope but also express that sometimes extreme sadness leads to depression and other unpleasant situations. In this case we highlight the importance of sadness in our lives but also put a clear line between the mandatory sadness and the extreme "problematic" one.
✏️How to participate:
Write a 5-to-10 sentence letter to sadness highlighting it but also putting clear boundaries.
Example:
Dear sadness,
I know you are a natural feeling and a really mandatory one. Thank you for letting me express and lighten myself. Thank you for letting me feel. Despite all those I would like to tell you that if you keep coming back and trying to get into my everyday life I'll have to kick you off. I thank you for letting me feel but I won't let you interfere with my daily life.

Sadness, you have taught me so many things.
I have cried many tears.
My heart has ached.
It has been lonely and frightening.
Exhausting and intense.
But when it all passed , it taught me how to appreciate the good things, how to grab life and enjoy it.
To not shy away from opportunities.
And to always know after a storm always comes the sun.
Everything passes 🩷🩵
Dear sadness,
I'll be honest... I really don't even like to acknowledge you. Thanks for balancing me out though. Sometimes I enjoy picking at scars together. There's also the fact that I wouldn't know what could be better without you. Just... If you come to the forefront, next time, you've gotta be ready to step back on cue.

Dear Sadness,
I always picture you as a young child, or even a baby. I suppose that makes sense– you're confused, overwhelmed, and seem to think that crying will solve everything. And i feel much like a tired parent, kept up at night by your loudness. It makes it so that I cant detest you, as parents do not detest their children, that I am almost fond of you, the silly child who cries always. But I am also tired, and like any parent, I wish you would just sleep for a while. Please, just close your eyes, I'll still be here when you wake.
– Me.
Dear Sadness,
You're heavy. A cold block in my chest, a sharp clang that hits with each heartbeat. It hurts to breathe when you're this heavy. You slow my breath and make my world silent.
You make everything feel totally impossible at times. I try not to fight your presence. I try to sit in your quiet darkness. Sometimes you seem cruel, reminding me of the deep wounds I carry. You're welcome to stay until you finish speaking. I'm trying to be patient but I am waiting for you to leave.
Sincerely,
Twist

You have such an amazing way of writing letters. Thanks for opening up and trusting me enough to do so. Take care

Dear Sadness,
Thank you for existing in my world. You are a breath of fresh air. You remind me that the world makes sense; that sad things make people sad, and it’s supposed to be that way. Not that I need more sad things in my life (no offense) and maybe sometimes you could come around with a little less intensity? Still, I’d rather hang out with you any day over Depression. I guess people say he’s your cousin or something? (maybe more like 16th cousin 5 times removed)? Don’t worry. I don’t confuse you with him. You can simply be who you are, and I’ll respect that you continue to remind me I’m human.
Sincerely,
Sophia
