Mourning a Fantasy

I'm kind of sad that we live in the real world, and not something more akin to a fantasy. I guess, besides the obvious fact that fantasy worlds are cool, I also like the concept of people actually finding purpose and doing something active in their everyday life. You don't need 10 years of college to become a blacksmith in fantasy, for example.

Perhaps it comes from the same root as my idealized view of people who started working and becoming independent in their teens? I am speculating a little bit. For context for those who don't know, I am a very dependent adult. I am 27, actually.

So, yeah. I'm currently mourning a fantasy life I never had because it doesn't exist. Anyone else do this?

@BusyBird yeah i would imagine its quite common nowdays. I spent every year ever since i was 20 either working, thinking about work or recovering from work. Cant help but mourn the 'wasted' years, the fun i missed out on, the people i couldve met, the purpose i failed to find. Its easy to focus on survival and being self dependent that you discard everything else in the process. If there was a possible balance to be had i sure as *** couldnt find it haha i hope you do tho.

@mont22ha I hope you do too! And I totally get it. There's nothing grand or special about what most people end up doing, as we are all trying to just survive and make it okay. Sometimes I like to think maybe being a good human is a good purpose to have, as even the little things can benefit ourselves and the world over time. It just isn't as thrilling in concept as what our brains dream about, I think.

Are your fantasy worlds the worlds of elves, wizards and magic... I'm not sure I know what you mean when you say fantasy?

@Sharings In my case? Yes. Sometimes, anyway.

We all can fantasize about anything. Maybe sometimes I legitimately wish I was like a rogue in a fantasy world like the movies and books portray. Other times I might find it an interesting change to instead imagine a cyberpunk reality that can also be like movies, or maybe I will take inspiration from other universes like.... I don't know. Team Fortress 2? That would be funny and also horrifying in a way lol

I can relate to the first part of this a lot. You've put it into words so nicely.

Right now I most want to be a Pokemon trainer 😆 I would have Jolteon as my partner Pokemon and would travel around researching all the different species across all the regions. It sure doesn't hurt that healthcare is free and everyone seems generally pretty pro-science and research.

@JackalopesExist I'm so glad you think so! 😁

Honestly, that sounds fun! Why is Jolteon your partner Poke'Mon of choice, if I may ask? I think that one is pretty cool.

@BusyBird

Lifelong favorite at this point :) I got into Pokemon about 20 years ago because I was at a family friend's house and they had a bunch of Pokemon toys that I found in a drawer being a nosy child. I pretty quickly pointed out and decided it was my favorite and the rest is history haha. To this day I almost always use it on my team in any of the games it shows up in.

Who would you choose?

@JackalopesExist Sorry for late response. I have been doing a lot lately 😅

That's totally fair! Actually it kind of reminds me of a Neopet tpy I was given as a little girl by a teen boy. I don't remember what it was called, and my parents have surely thrown it away by now, but it kind of resembled a Jolteon in style.

If I had to pick a Poke'Mon? That's tough! There are a lot of cool ones. Maybe... a Rattata? Or maybe a Noibat?

@BusyBird

No worries at all! Oh man, Neopets. That takes me back as it was my other childhood obsession besides Pokemon :) I got hooked from the McDonalds toys they had back in the day and played the online game for years after.

I love that! Rattata is so underrated and I've always been fond of it too, even though it gets written off a lot as an early game mon. Noibat is so cute and I really love its evolved form!
