Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals

Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.

A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

1)Time management and I am doing it perfectly except sometimes I end up feeling too tired.

2)First is going to gym, second is reminding myself of my goal and path, and third taking breaks in between

@Hope

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

Most of the things in my life require time management and energy management (related to an illness).

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

  • Self check-ins to see how my energy levels are for the day and what is realistic for me to work toward my goals.
  • Keeping a schedule and routine helps me the most with keeping up with tasks that I need to work toward to accomplish my goals.
  • Regularly take self-care breaks to avoid burnout and overexertion.

When I take the time in my day to do these things, I tend to get further and don't over do it and suffer the consequences later.

  1. Set daily priorities and create to-do lists.
  2. Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
  3. Review and adjust my schedule weekly to stay on track.

@HereToHelp135 You're on the right track with those behaviors! Setting daily priorities and breaking tasks down into smaller steps will really help reduce overwhelm. It's also great that you're planning to review your schedule weekly—it’s such an important habit for staying flexible and making sure you stay on top of things! Keep it up, you’ve got this! 🙌

@Hope

I truly appreciated the insights presented on the video. I also found the article shared to be detailed and full of great information on systems and goals. I think that I might take the time to read "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big" by Scott Adams. The discussion regarding systems vs goals is an important one and allows us to focus on improvement rather than reaching the thing and being done.

What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

A Mindfulness practice

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

  • Setting a designated time of the day to practice mindfulness (meditate, breathing exercises, etc.)
  • Tracking my progress via Notion
  • Starting with 10-minute guided meditations and increase the duration gradually until I can practice for longer durations and without the need for guidance.

Key System: A key system I need to set up in my life is a time management system that allows me to balance my work, personal life, and self-care more effectively. Right now, I tend to focus a lot on getting specific tasks done, but without a structured system in place, I often find myself stressed or overwhelmed.

Three Behaviors to Grow the System:

  1. Time Blocking: Set aside specific hours each day for work, self-care, and rest. This way, I’m actively prioritizing different aspects of my life and creating boundaries.
  2. Daily Reflection: Spend 5 minutes at the end of each day reflecting on what went well, what I could improve, and how I can better structure my time the next day.
  3. Regular Breaks: Implement a system of taking short, consistent breaks throughout the day, particularly when working on tasks that require focus. This will help keep my energy levels high and prevent burnout.

This approach could really make a difference in sustaining my progress over time. It’s all about creating consistent habits! 💪😊
