Course 1, Discussion 4: System vs Goals

Hello Leadership Crew!

Welcome to our 4th discussion in this first course. In today's discussion, we will be talking about systems vs. goals.

To start, please read this post here and watch this video.

The basic argument here is that having a system is better than having a goal. A system is a way of behaving that helps you move towards accomplishing something. A goal is usually and end state that happens after you have accomplished something. I think eating healthy is a good example. A goal might be to lose 10 pounds. In this case, you feel kind of bad about yourself until you hit that goal; and then, once you hit it, you kind of lose the purpose because the goal has been reached. If you relapse and gain wait again, then you fall back into feeling bad about yourself again. Contrast this with a system of eating healthy.

A system might include things like: having a big glass of water prior to each meal; eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, and nuts; not eating after 9pm; and/or doing some level of intermittent fasting. You wouldn't integrate all of these new healthy eating behaviors at once. Instead, you'd gradually introduce one and then another and then another over whatever period of time makes sense. The system enables you to continuously get healthier and healthier. You will eventually reach the goal, but it'll be the byproduct of eating healthy.

This also has implications for 7 Cups as well. We might have goals of having a certain amount of group support messages or 1:1 messages. Those are fine goals to have, but we mostly want to create a system of support where people care for one another and then the natural result is an increased number of messages.

Eating health is such a good and important system that will set you up for success throughout life. Our health in general is a very precious thing. Your chosen behaviors sound actionable, I wish you luck with your new system!

1) A key system for more active life style
2) working out, going for a run, waking up early, in search for kick-boxing training

I like the video's phrase 'it can be a failure from a goal's standpoint, but a success from a system standpoint (because it teaches skills)' it reminds me of this great twitter post "every strange thing you've ever been into, every failed hobby or forgotten instrument, everything you have ever learned will come back to you, will serve you when you need it. No love, however brief, is wasted." (Louise Miller @Louisethebaker on X 8/04/2021)

what is a key system you need to set up in your life to help you succeed
  • My two system ideas were
  • (1) language learning and
  • (2) some sort of working system to help me achieve my daily work tasks despite feeling overwhelmed/ put off/ procrastination. ChatGPT helpfully renamed this to "structured workflow system": 'a daily system that reduces overwhelm and makes starting tasks automatic'

what are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life
Structured workflow system
  1. A start up ritual that signals the start of focused work time. I've decided this will be an unstructured 'brain dump' since I already have structured/ planned to-do lists
  2. Pre-plan the 'next small step' at the end of each work session
  3. Start each work session with the 2 minute launch rule (just start working for 'only two minutes') on whatever the pre-planned 'next small step' was

Language learning behaviors:
  1. Warm-up with daily Duolingo
  2. Out loud reading of short story/ few book pages
  3. Watch one short video in target language
  4. Micro journal in target language

 Key System for Success:

A consistent daily routine is one of the most powerful systems to set up for long-term success. It creates structure, builds discipline, and maximizes productivity without burnout.

✒️ 3 Behaviors to Grow This System:

  1. Start with a Morning Ritual:
    Wake up at the same time daily and follow a short routine—hydration, movement, planning your top 3 priorities.
  2. Time Blocking:
    Allocate specific hours for work, learning, rest, and self-care. Stick to it even if the task changes.
  3. Nightly Reflection:
    Spend 5–10 minutes reviewing your day—what worked, what didn’t, and how you can improve tomorrow.

@Hope

1. I would like to set up a more healthy routine with exercise and socialising

2. 3 components would be: being for empathetic, try to talk more, prioritize myself as well

1. A key system that I must set up to succeed in life is to assess myself first. Am I ready? Can I reach this goal? What qualities do I possess to attain this goal? I must have all resources available to reach the goal. In 7 Cups, the key system is to access my energy levels and qualities, to maintain efficacy, and succeed.

2. Behaviors to help me grow that new system in my life: creativity, conscientiousness, and innovation.

@Hope

1. Be more organised with paper work.

2. a) be more aware how I classify the paper work. b) throw to the trash what is not necessary. c) keep it simple

@Hope

 What is a key system that you need to set up in your life to help you succeed?

I need to sleep better. I'll do this by implementing the following in sequential order: turning my phone off when I go to sleep, getting to sleep at a regular time, reviewing sleep quality reports, and including my support circle in that journey.

What are 3 behaviors you can implement to help you gradually grow that new system in your life?

See above.

I love the idea of including your support circle! It's so nice to have a support system to help keep us accountable (and be our cheerleaders!)

I've also tried to get better about my sleep habits and recently enabled a setting within my phone that turns off all alerts after a certain time. It helps me not get caught up in checking emails or messages late at night (which would in turn wake me up even more than I already was).

I wish you luck and good, restful sleep! 🥰
