Course 1, Discussion 5: 7 Cups Culture
Hello Leadership Crew!
I hope you have been benefitting from this course. This is the last discussion of our course 1.
We take culture seriously on 7 Cups because it is the heart of how we operate. A wise person once said: You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are. We can have all of the best training content we want, but if our culture is not strong, then we will not be successful in growing a thriving, compassionate, community that will make a global impact.
Every organization has a culture whether by design or by default. When culture (including values and mission are not called out or made explicit, the organization defaults to an implicit or unstated culture. The unnamed culture is not always great for the end users or the community. An example of a common and implicit cultural rule or norm is that the person that makes the most money or the organization is the most important. People that work in this organization then, naturally, because it is the culture, start organizing themselves around ways to make more and more money. The ones at the top of the hierarchy are the ones that make the most money. 7 Cups cares less about money and more about compassion. We call out compassion and celebrate compassionate people because that is central to the work we do.
Please read our guide here to deeply understand our culture. We have made it explicit because we believe it is important to help us all be accountable to what we stand for and believe in. As leaders on 7 Cups, you will be models that emulate our culture and values.

✒️ Three Most Important Things I Learned from the 7 Cups Culture Guide
1. Compassion is the Heart of Our Community
7 Cups is built on compassion, focusing on emotional support rather than financial gain. This resonates deeply with me because true leadership is about serving others, not just personal success. A culture that values kindness creates a safe space where people feel heard and valued.
2. Culture Must Be Intentional, Not Accidental
Every organization has a culture, whether stated or not. By clearly defining our values, we ensure 7 Cups remains a place where people are uplifted rather than lost in unspoken expectations. This matters to me because clarity in values leads to consistent actions and a supportive environment.
3. Leadership is About Modeling, Not Just Teaching
"You teach what you know, but you reproduce who you are." This stood out to me because leadership isn’t just about sharing knowledge—it’s about living the values we want others to follow. If I want to create a space of empathy and understanding, I must practice those qualities myself.
@SomeoneWhoListen
Hey. I really enjoyed reading your response. I agree with everything you said about the 3 key aspects from the guide.
@Hope
From the 7 Cups culture guide, I learned three key things:
- Caring for people with fewer financial resources – this aligns with my values of supporting those in need.
- Trust – fostering trust is crucial for personal growth and mission success.
- High expectations and warmth – balancing accountability with encouragement leads to personal and collective growth.
These principles are important to me because they highlight the significance of compassion, trust, and a supportive environment in achieving success.
@HereToHelp135
I am glad to learn about your key takeaways from the guide. Thank you for sharing these important insights with us. I also found your point on the importance of balancing accountability and encouragement to achieve growth to be a crucial one.
@HereToHelp135
those are some really good things to take away from the guide.
@Hope
The three most important things that I learned from the guide are
- Accountability : I value accountability and believe that it demonstrates our commitment to ourselves, our team, and our mission. I also find the mention of time management to be rather important, especially since time management can be a key aspect of accountability. For me, managing time allows us to meet our deadlines and to hold ourselves accountable.
- Self-Efficacy or Mastery: As a perfectionist, I tend to have moments of self-doubt and to lack trust in myself whenever I don't achieve the things I planned before. I love that the focus is on developing our confidence and teaching us to trust ourselves. As we solve problems and work with our community, we are stacking small wins and these wins can help us trust ourselves and our abilities.
- Have Fun and Be Fulfilled: I appreciate the focus on having fun and on being fulfilled, and I find this particularly important. The seriousness of work on 7 cups does not mean that we cannot find the balance between being serious and enjoying our work, interactions, and experiences here. I also believe that as we are having fun working, we are less prone to feeling stressed and can bounce back easily from setbacks.
@SweetSunset92
i like that your explanation is so in-depth. It inspires me that listeners are taking the information to heart.

To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.
— 1. High Expectations + High Warmth = Growth, 7 Cups believes in holding people to high standards while creating a safe, supportive space. This combination helps people outperform their own expectations and grow personally and professionally
2. Solving Problems = Progress, the key to success at 7 Cups (and in life) is to stay focused and keep solving the next most important problem. Failure is expected, but solving meaningful problems fuels personal development and helps the mission move forward.
3. Trust and Kindness Build Everything, trust is the foundation of the culture. Being warm, friendly increases trust and trust enables real impact, collaboration, and community strength.
Thank you so much!
@wishfulashx I really resonate with your post! I love how you highlighted the balance between high expectations and high warmth, it really does set the stage for growth, especially when people feel supported while being challenged. Also, the point about solving problems is spot on; taking one step at a time and tackling challenges head-on is definitely key to moving forward. And trust and kindness are absolutely essential; they create a safe environment where people feel valued and understood, which in turn strengthens the whole community. Great insights!
The Three Most Important Things I Learned from the Guide:
-
Active Listening: I learned the importance of listening without judgment or interruptions, as it allows the person to feel heard and understood. This is essential in any listening or helping role because it creates a safe space for individuals to express themselves, which is the foundation of support.
-
Empathy vs. Sympathy: Understanding the difference between empathy and sympathy stood out to me. Empathy is about connecting with someone's feelings on a deeper level, while sympathy can sometimes come off as distancing or feeling pity. It's important because empathy strengthens the connection, helping others feel less isolated in their struggles.
-
Reflecting, Not Giving Advice: The guide emphasized the power of reflecting back what someone says instead of offering advice. This technique helps the person explore their own feelings and solutions, empowering them and fostering their growth. This is important because it encourages self-reflection and personal agency rather than dependence on external solutions.
@Hope
I learned that it's okay to fail, but accountability is important, too. I've learned that 7 Cups sees the person as a whole and doesn't expect listeners or the team to separate work from personal. Lastly, I've learned that 7 Cups is trust-based, and I think that is important in any group or company.
@giggleBubbles6722
Great insight
3 things stood out for me is
Take Care of Yourself , We Expect Failure. Try Hard. I think these 3 things are top things that a listener needs to do to be successful on cups.
@Heartsandrosesandpaws
I agree, these messages are really powerful and stuck out to me too!
@Hope Tahnk you

✒️To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.
The three most important things I’ve learned for myself are:
1. My work matters
The work I do is about helping others, and it's when I see that I can truly support people that I feel a deep sense of fulfillment.
2. Expecting failure
I’ve learned to expect that I will fail sometimes—and that’s okay. Failure is an opportunity, a sign that there might be better tools or approaches to consider. It’s not the opposite of success; it’s part of it.
3. Taking care of myself
Staying balanced is essential. When I take care of myself, I perform better in my role of service to others.

✒️To help make it more real, in this post, please highlight the 3 most important things you learned from our guide and why they are important to you.
- Making excuses is a behavior that drains our tanks.
- Exercising good self-care means staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water.
- Failure is nothing to be scared of and it is nothing to worry about as long as you are focused and trying.
@RisingSunset225 I think these are great takeaways from the culture guide! Making excuses definetly drains your and possibly others' tanks if they have to check in on you constantly to make sure work is getting done. Staying hydrated is also important to self-care, and you can only give your best at 7cups if you're feeling your best! And of course, failure is never something to be scared of as it helps you learn.
