Course 2, Discussion 3: High Expectations and High Warmth

Congrats! You made it the second course in the LDP! In this course, we focus on the specific interpersonal skills needed to be a strong leader on 7 Cups, including mastery of communication skills, time management, conflict resolution, stress management and empowering new leaders.

I know if you are here, you have read our values and culture guide. I would like to start off by further emphasizing one value that's required for a leader to be successful here, and that is balancing High Expectations & High Warmth.

Work environments with high expectations and minimal warmth tend to result in companies that are very driven, rule-oriented and risk-averse. The people do not tend to grow as much personally or professionally. On the other hand, workplaces that are high in warmth, but have minimal expectations, tend to struggle. Everyone is happy and feels loved, but not a lot of effective or focused work gets done.

7 Cups is high expectations AND high warmth. We expect a lot from you. You might feel like we think you are more capable than other people have suggested or maybe even more capable than how you see yourself. That is okay. Every person on the team has outperformed and done better than they expected. This is largely because warmth, patience, and trust help people make much more progress than they have in other environments. We have high expectations, but we will provide plenty of encouragement and guidance to help you get there.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

It can lead to burnout and complacency, this means that as a leader you become less effective in your role and eventually you can become unapproachable to others.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

The community will see that your not engaged as a leader and the realtionship between the leader and the community will break down.

Where you are no longer engaged it can bring down moral with other leaders and make them feel like they can't work with you, or frustrated that they need to pick up more work from you.

If I have an imbalance of expectations and warmth, it would lead to low productivity, lack of team work, inability to get work done etc.

Having too low expectations or too little warmth will negatively impact the community and my work with my fellow leaders. Having too little expectations will impact the productivity of the team, lead to chaos due to lack of proper rules, regulations and deadlines etc.

Having too little warmth would decrease trust between member.

Thank you for this reminder! This value High expectations and High warmth is truly important to set a foundation for the best portrayal of our leadership skills.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

The lack of warmth on my part as a 7 Cups leader can lead to an unempathetic and unsafe environment dismantling the very purpose of our community. While the lack of clear expectations or objectives will not inspire me to stay consistent and give my best to the work.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1) Impact on Community - Low expectations can prevent any focused work and genuine achievements for the humanitarian cause we stand for. Little warmth will destroy the very purpose of the community that is to create a safe, reliable and growth oriented supportive mental health space.

2) Impact on Work with Fellow Leaders - Low expectations can centralize the work in a few hands thereby preventing collaboration. It can also prevent fostering understanding amongst the leaders. Low warmth will wash down the inner drive for growth and create an unsupportive environment where conflicts might persist.

1) I think it will affect my effectiveness, non-biased, and outcome as a 7Cups leader; moreover, it will impact my personality as a leader in a negative way, which will reflect in the environment I work in.

2) Little expectations can make someone feel lost, unsure of what's right and what's enough. Little warmth could make someone unapproachable and difficult to reach out to.

So true. Being a leader as well you need to feel the sense of communion and compassion.

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

I think it'll probably affect the leaders perception of diagnosing what might be wrong.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

The community wouldn't know what to do or what they'll recieve if they don't know what to expect.

As for how it might affect our collaborative work as leaders. I think little warmth would cause some kind of friction. Low expectations maybe would make others feel that they're not good enough to do a certain role.

Affecting the leaders perception is such a brilliant way of describing it! An imbalance of warmth + expectations would definitely affect how a leader sees things and therefore affect how they could handle things to improve them.

I also like the idea that low expectations would make people feel they're not good enough. Higher expectations may be scary at times, but they also help us see that we are capable of more than we think (especially if we have the support aka warmth to help back us up!)

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, hve an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

People are not going to want to work as they won't find enjoyment out of the project anymore.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

People aren't going to be able to rely on you. They won't have as much confidence in you as a leader.

What happens if you a 7 Cups leader has an imbalance of expectations and warmth?
  • I think in both cases effective work won't get done. Either because the expectations are unclear or because they are too much without the necessary support
How do you think having too low expectations or too little warmth will impact a. the community and b. how you work with your fellow leaders?
  • The community wouldn't run as smoothly as it currently is as work would not be getting done.
  • With fellow leaders there would be tension due to everyone feeling like there is not enough work getting done and there is not enough support to even get the work done.
  • Overall it would create a lack of structure that would ultimately harm both the community and the leaders.

Dear @FrenchToast,

✒️ What do you think happens if you, a 7 Cups leader, have an imbalance of expectations and warmth?

If I were a 7 Cups leader and have high expectations and low warmth. It will make people feel more unappreciated, which will lead to demotivation.

on the other side, if I had high warmth and low expectations. It will create an environment, where people are comfortable and there is no productivity in workplace.

✒️ How do you think having too low of expectations, or too little warmth, will impact 1.) the community, and 2.) impact how you work with your fellow leaders?

1. The Community

- Reduced trust and safety

- decreasing in motivation

- Reduce in empathy, which will reduce the support quality

2. On working with fellow leaders

- More arguments due to low agreeableness

- Difficulty working with each other on projects

- Decrease in integrity
