Course 3, Discussion 1: Service Leadership at 7 Cups
The term Service leadership (based on the philosophy of servant leadership, in which the main goal of the leader is to serve). Sometimes leaders or community members who help with projects receive high praise for their efforts (and they all deserve it) but this is never to take away or undermine the contributions of listeners who fly a little bit more under the radar. How one chooses to spend their volunteer time on 7 Cups is up to them & we love you all the same!
We've long said that if you want to be a mentor, be a mentor, eventually you'll get a badge. These service leadership roles are incredibly important to the functionality of our community. The individuals in these posts do an excellent job helping to keep our community safe and positive. I am very thankful for them.
Service leadership is simply about where you plan to spend your time. To those of you out there who focus 100% on member chats, we LOVE YOU! To those of you out there who focus on community programs, we LOVE YOU TOO! All of these contributions are equally valuable and important. As a collective community, our aim is to honor your contributions, no matter where or how they manifest.
In this vein, my hope is that you will remember 3 key things:
1. Self-care - always! Make sure self-care is baked into your volunteer work here
2. Don't take on more than you are able. If you don't have the bandwidth to do something, you owe it to yourself and the community to say no. It is 100% okay to say no. (And if you are asking someone to help you with a project, please do not get upset if someone has to say no.)
3. Remember that 7 Cups is an ecosystem. Every single contribution matters!
If you'd like to be in a service leadership role, my advice would be:
1. Pay attention to how others are contributing
2. Figure out what gets you excited in the community!
3. Once you have an idea of what gets you excited, dive in! You dont need to have a mentor badge to help out, get involved & start learning.
4. If you're not sure how to get involved, you can chat with a mentor or sign up for listener coaching.
5. Once you feel comfortable with your area of attention, apply for the appropriate mentor track.

Servant leadership IS 7 Cups. Every single one of us employs servant leadership in our roles. Servant leadership is committing yourself to a cause greater than yourself. It's dedicating yourself to collaborating with others to build and grow an authentic community of caring and compassion. It's selflessness and dependable too. It's a perfect term for 7 Cupsers.
There are so many examples on 7 Cups, it's almost impossible to pick one! The listeners who dedicate their time to listen to members empathetically and patiently and with so much respect, the listener chatroom supporters who are always understanding, supportive, and ready to help no matter the question, the forum supporters and the academy who are SO encouraging and I learn so much from and am so grateful they've been there, the peer appreciation team who spread so much joy.
Honestly, I could go on and on, I'm ever so grateful for every single one. 7 Cups is one of the most wonderful and supportive places I've ever known. ❤️
@MarinaLexi Oops! I meant service! 😅
@FrenchToast
Service leadership focuses on serving others and contributing to a greater cause without seeking personal recognition. It’s about making an impact while prioritizing the well-being of others.

I really love how everyone is so passionate about contributing in their own way. Whether it’s through member chats, community programs, or other roles, all of these efforts truly make the 7 Cups community a wonderful place. Keep up the amazing work, everyone! You're all making a difference!
@H4RIS
I can understand where you are coming from, and that is a great to outlook the positive things that 7cups can offer. I will also say there are some teams on here that also display the service leadership as well. Thank you for your thoughts, and your perspective <3
@H4RIS Absolutely. I think a leader who knows how to serve and not just lead really does contribute to the greater good 😊
It's a really important thing that every leader should have.
I feel that service leadership contains a lot of affiliative minded leaders, those that take the needs/wants of the team members as well as members seriously. By placing emotions over progression, but also values achievements/goals and praises everyone on a job well done.
Example of a service leadership: I would say is the peer appreciation team (my fellow team members), because we take time to shine the light on others, take the emotional integrity seriously by displaying them in beautiful pieces of art. As well as praising each other for doing a job well done, and congratulating each other. While we value the members, listeners and ATLs that we are honoring.
@InsightfulPhoenix Your example is a great one. I forget about them but even their small task helps the listeners out alot.
Question: What do you think of the idea of service leadership? Can you list one example of service leadership you have seen on 7 Cups?
I see it as the act of helping the community and other leaders. The idea would be how to make 7Cups a more healthy and effective community for our members and our listeners. We work together in order for that to work. Every member is valuable and no one should be considered lesser than for the roles they perform
@SunnyCthulhu Whoops forgot to place the second answer here. Examples are the people who review profiles to find potential leaders. In my case, the leader who identified my profile would be considered performing a service to empower the overall community
@SunnyCthulhu I love how you put that! Service leadership is about uplifting the entire community and supporting each other.

I think the idea of service leadership is where the goal of the leader is to serve and contribute their time and knowledge in order to help those around them. In my experience on 7Cups my own personal mentors have really helped me in both thriving in my platform and chats while also ensuring that I have no questions or concerns about anything.

I really love the idea of service leadership! It emphasizes that leadership isn’t about recognition or titles, but about serving and contributing where you can to make the community better.
One great example I’ve seen on 7 Cups is community mentors who offer guidance and support while ensuring everything runs smoothly and creating a positive, safe and inclusive environment for all.

Service leadership is about helping and serving others positively, and personal I think it's a wonderful thing to do. With service leadership, you're not just a leader but also a helper, someone others can rely on, and someone that serves as they lead. One example is Mentors who help new members have a wonderful experience or those who help teens transition into adults here on 7Cups.

Service leadership is when the objective of the leader is to serve. An example of this on 7cups is the leaders of sub-communities ie. room supporters.
