Course 3, Discussion 4: One Key Metric
It is pretty easy to get knocked off track in life. One way to stay on track is to have a core metric that guides you. If you have a north star that you are working towards, then you know how well you are doing. It is harder to be in denial or to participate in activities that are less helpful in meeting that goal.
There are 2 parts to this discussion.
✒️ Work with your team or mentor and identify the key metric you are hoping to help move. Post daily (or the cadence that makes sense) in the 3 key things thread to highlight what you are doing to help us move 7 Cups forward. Please post here why this goal of choosing a single metric is important. Think of how this is important in your professional life, but also how this can help you personally as well.
✒️ (TW: themes that deal with death) Read chapter 12 of our Searching Soul book and do the exercise where you imagine it is the end of your life. If comfortable, post what you imagine people saying to you at the conclusion of the exercise. If comfortable, then please share how the exercise impacted you. What you imagine them telling you is your compass. If you are acting in a way that is consistent with what they are saying, then it is very likely that you will end up living a meaningful life. Remember to listen to and follow this compass so as not to be distracted by the clock.

It's important to focus on a single metric, because it's easy to get distracted on a singular goal itself and may require all your time to achieve this singular goal. As far as the second exercise is concerned, I already did something similar in a college health class where we are tasked with understanding the different stages of dying. I would say it's easier to look back on your life if you have felt you have achieved everything you have wanted to as this would help temper various expectations of how people would perceive you when dying.
Hi @Clairvoyantmercenary !
I agree! Focusing on a single goal indeed helps in achieving it efficiently. Reflecting on your life achievements and aligning them with your values is truly impactful.

Choosing a core metric helps you stay focused on what matters most, both professionally and personally. It ensures your actions align with your goals, avoiding distractions and helping you track progress. Professionally, it aligns with company objectives and improves time management. Personally, it gives direction and purpose.
Reflecting on what you'd like people to say about you at the end of your life serves as a guide for intentional living. It ensures that your current actions align with the legacy you want to leave.

I think choosing a single metric helps you focus on it rather than getting pulled in a million different directions. It can be incredibly hard to focus on more than one and if you choose a metric that encompasses many different values you can achieve a great deal.

I'd rather not share due to personal circumstances, but I have written it in my journal and intend to reflect on it over the next few days.
@MarinaLexi
I can understand not wanting to share the exercise experience, I almost did not want to myself but remember you are doing the best you can for yourself. That right there is something to be proud of <3

I actually have done this exercise offsite, it's called "true north", some call it the North Star Metric. In this case, 3 things that I am doing to assist in the changes of 7cups are as follows:
1. I became an AE team member
2. I decided to take the leap and become a LCT member
3. I have taken my roles seriously because they contribute change to the community
The things that AE and LCT have in common is assisting those who are struggling, having empathy but also providing transparent feedback, and quality service to all making 7cups safer as well as more reliable. My team member from LCT liked my motivation, and compassion that I start training for a higher spot in LCT after Feb 14th.
I feel that my team leader recognizing my strengths, helped me gain more inner personal motivation, and made me think about how I could take these mannerisms an use them in work environment, because if a person can focus on the good about me then I am doing something right.

my journey with the book:
This book really made me think for a minute, I had to pause a few times to cry because my empathy was hitting me like a freight train. Going to be transparent, I will read this again at point, and see if my answers have changed to the thought spot reflection questions.
There is a lot of realizations and conclusions that I have come too. Here it goes, I realized that my parents were toxic. My mom did nothing to get my sister and I out of the abuse, and my father did not want to get the help until later. I was in denial that they would treat me better if they did get the help, my mom is still in low contact with me, and my dad well.. we do not talk. I firmly believe it is for the best though, because his actions told me everything I needed to know. I also realized that throughout my life, I gave more than I should have, and I have to take blame for that because in a way I was enabling which I had no idea I was till 2/3 years ago. I also have came to the conclusion, that the reason I was settling with the toxic friends, and even partners ( including my daughter's bio) was because at the time it was what I thought I deserve.
I used the aunt maggie analogy, and compared it to staying with my grandparents 2 years ago, it made me realize that I made the right choices to get me to where I am at today, and yes there are no "evil" people but there are people that are enabled daily for their toxic habits, an I no longer wanted to be apart of that. I held myself accountable for lacking boundaries, enabling the mistreated and helped myself find this place. Now I am blossoming in ways no one ever imagined.
This book made me realize, that I have done a lot of accomplishments, and yes some bad but everything happens for a reason. An that is something, I am beyond grateful for and I appreciate doing this exercise <3

@Dash0 Absolutely! Focusing on a single metric is like having a clear roadmap, it helps eliminate distractions and keeps you on track.
And imagining what others might say about you at the end of your life does really puts things into perspective!

I think having a metric makes the path ahead clearer. Without these goals and metrics, it would be difficult to know our progress and do meaningful work. Personally, choosing a metric would help me be more focused.
