Gender affirming haircuts

I’m a teen girl, but i’m currently experimenting with pronouns. i’ve been going with she/they for a while, but i think something more fluid fits better. to help me feel comfortable with myself, i wanted to get a buzz cut. (not a spontaneous thought, ive been thinking about this for a long time, and i wouldn’t get it for a few months). i think it will help me build confidence, and express myself. however, i don’t think my parents would be very happy about it. they know i’m queer (i have a girlfriend who’s also nonbinary) and my brother is gay so they’re fine about that. my brother also goes by he/they but my parents don’t know about either of our pronouns. my dad talked about my brother’s once and he seemed judgmental so i kinda kept my thoughts to myself. this haircut is definitely a big change so i don’t know how they’ll feel. if you guys have any advice on how to talk to them about it or anything at all that would be greatly appreciated <3 also if there are any other masculine haircuts you know of that are maybe a little longer please let me know! hope you are all doing well!!

I am glad your parents are accepting.

And you can be you.

I would just be honest, explaining what the haircut represents for you.

And when it comes to using pronouns, it's about being patient with people because sometimes it's not about judgement, it's simply that we don't know what ones make you feel comfortable, so it's about communication and time 🩵🤗

@lolorye89 it's a great thing that you're experimenting and getting more familiar with your gender identity, however complex it may be. If you think this haircut can help you exploring with the way you present yourself and it might make you feel like your appearance matches how you feel, go for it!

Your parents are getting familiar with queer stuff, even if they might seem judgemental at times it might just be that they're new to this and they're still learning what this all means and how to deal with it. But if they're willing to hear you out, open their mind and let you be whoever and however feels right to you, they'll get to a point where none of this will seem strange to them anymore. Just hold on and remember that discovering yourself and feeling free is the most important thing. If your parents are open to dialogue, even if not everything will be easy at first you can still get to a point where they see you and accept your choices completely.

Today I found a picture of me wearing my bra, makeup and a buzz cut -- it might be a new favorite! I look so happy!

My knee jerk response is to say "better to ask for forgiveness than permission!" But I know that advice isn't for everyone.

It might help to say you want shorter hair for summer, or maybe just to see how it feels. A buzzcut can feel so freeing, kind of like how your legs feel after shaving if you haven't in a while.

As for longer but more masculine haircuts, you could look at celeb haircuts. Harry Styles and Justin Bieber come to mind. OR you could get your hair buzzed with a 1" guard - same concept but a little longer to maybe keep your parents happy.

I hope your parents accept you for who you are. A haircut might not be the way to start that conversation (although it could be), but I hope when it does happen, it is a most lovely experience 😸🤟
