Seeking Validation and Encouragement

I’m bi/pan female and I’ve been with my boyfriend (cis/het)for 10 years. Yes, it’s another one of those “I think I need to break up with my boyfriend but I love him” posts.

I’ve been trying to be patient and understand while he deconstructs what he’s been taught by his MAGA family. I didn’t know he didn't vote in elections until 6ish years ago. However, he didn’t vote in this election either. And when I told him I was heartbroken when I recently learned his family were Trump supporters, he said, “Over a difference in political opinions?” I was shocked.

I think I’m done being patient with waiting for him to deconstruct things. If he still thinks the current election was just about a difference in political beliefs, I am not sure he actually cares enough to actually do the work, and hasn’t really been doing the work.

I‘m scared that I’m being impulsive (a common trait of mine) so I am definitely going to not act on this right now. But I also can’t just pretend everything is okay.

I am scared to end a relationship that’s been going on for so long. And I do still love him even though I feel betrayed and as if he had slapped me in the face.

And goodness, I know this isn’t a good reason to stay with someone, but I can’t afford to live on my own and don’t know what to do about the living situation until I can find a roommate.

@peculiarfairy I'm sorry you're going through this. I agree, it's not "just about different opinions": these elections had a real impact on people life, people are in danger for just being who they are, the rights of marginalized people are being questioned and stripped away. It is NOT just an opinion and if he can't see that just because it doesn't affect him (but it affects you), his lack of empathy is more than enough reason to part ways.
Surely you can take all the time you need to make this step, but you're right to feel betrayed and to see this as a reason to let him go.
As for housing, maybe you can consider a temporary roommate or housemate? If nothing else works, look for LGBT associations that might assist you and help you find a solution.
I wish you the best. You're right to stand up for yourself and for what is right.

I kinda can relate. My fiancé's parents aren't exactly MAGA, but are at least sympathetic toward the administration. When they talk about the negative consequences that have been happening, it's been kinda hard lately to hold my tongue. They don't even know I'm bi, though. I'm afraid to tell them because I don't want them to think differently about me or to cause drama.
